Drum Machine Recommendation

Post by Val Drummond »

Any recommendations for a Drum Machine? I play local events with one other guitar player. We are having a hard time finding a drummer and/or bass player.
Looking at a possible drum machine,

Alesis SR-16 SR-18
Akai XR-20

Anyone use drum machines?

Do yourself a favor and check out Native Instrument's Maschine. It is a great drum "machine" but can also do pads, bass, etc. You'll need a laptop but if you have one its the best.

Lots of youtube videos

I've been happily using a Roland R70 for around 20 years. Along with drums, it lets me program bass parts.

FWIW, it takes some time to learn the machine, become proficient with it and get it to sound close to a human drummer. I found learning the machine was a worthwhile and helpful musical experience.

95% of my work is solo. I use backing tracks, including drum parts from the Roland R70, in virtually all my solo work.

SR16's are used by many "one" or "two" man bands around here.

I have an SR16 that I use in my recording studio. I also have a newer SR18 but the SR16 gets most of the use.

The first country band I was in used one of these. Never caused any problems, unlike a live drummer! Boop-ah-Chicka, Boop-ah-Chicka!
