Why???
If Merle and the Strangers showed up like this, I'd leave.
Why should I take off work early, drive a hundred miles, eat-out at an expensive restaurant, spend the night, pay $100 for tickets to see this!!!
I don't want to see the roadies perform.
Class, respect, and showmanship are appreciated.
And, besides, Norm and Biff would not look that good without a shirt.
Even KISS dressed up.
Just my opinion...

Oh, this one again.
Cool, Drew. I played rockabilly for years - when I decided to take up steel, there was a revolt when I wanted to bring a steel guitar onstage, so I bolted. They told me it was 'too hillbilly'. Yeah, right.
On topic again - 'proper' dress, like 'proper' instrumentation, depends on the context of the gig and people involved. Sometimes, themed and matching clothes look incomparably cool, sometimes they just look incomparably stupid, and sometimes it doesn't matter a hill of beans. Like anything, it's about knowing the difference.

Russ Tkac's bands duds
Tommy Gibbons, I'll bet the women in the audience, and some of the men even, would have appreciated Russ Tkac's bands' un-uniforms that evening. Can't please everyone. stevet

Today,Thats now 2011,(Not like the old days) the line dancers dress up, like cowboys ,and as if they where from Texas and bands wear what ever. The people will know who the band members are when we start playing.I will wear my Derby but not a Cowboy hat . I was told by a steel player that I have no right to wear a black derby, that right is for that other steel player(you all know who he is} Maybe I'll start wearing a ball cap.

banned unform
You are indeed correct, Russ, it was certainly a band uniform , or would that be "banned uniform" in some more or our conservative areas of the world ?

Ha! Yeah I once caught a bit of flack for wearing my bowler to a steel jam. But you know, I wear a bowler in honor of John Steed not some steel playerJoe Miraglia wrote:I was told by a steel player that I have no right to wear a black derby, that right is for that other steel player(you all know who he is} Maybe I'll start wearing a ball cap.
The last time I wore the same outfit as the other folks in the band was way back in college when I wore a rented tux for a choir performance. It was either rent the tux (with red bow tie ) or get a failing grade... As a poor college student it was a significant monetary sacrifice.
