Anyone ? info or personal experiance with Excel brand pedal steel.I am looking at on that is 15-20 yrs but in good shape?.Any info appreciated.I want to get a single neck 10,but am trying to find one close to home so i can see and hear it before i buy.I have asked a lot of questins from a lot of members of different models, some i would really like to have ,but out of my budget or too far away. Thanks to all the members that keep putting up with this newbe.A good friend of mine just loaned me his Baldwin So Bud,so i can start learning. He won't sell, but it is way too heavy for me,in the case it weighs 74 lbs.
Cheers. Carl

Carl,I have never owned an Exel guitar, but have sat down and played them in St Louis at their booth. While it probably is not at the top of the buyers list, there are still a lot of them out there.

Not as familiar with a 15 or 20 year model but if it is mechanically tight and has at least 8 pedals and 4 knee levers (For a double neck or at least three pedals and four levers (for single neck),it certainly would suffice until you decided playing steel is for you.

You might compare some prices for used guitars at Scotty's Music in St Louis,as he is an Excel dealer.

Hi Carl,
I am located just a bit north of Seattle.
I have (what I think is) a 1976 Excel D10 8x5 in red mica.
I like the guitar a lot, but I don't have any experience with other brands except a Fender 400.
You are welcome to come look at this one if you wish. C6 is torn apart right now because I am constantly tinkering, but the E9 neck is together.

Email me and I have a lot more details for you. I can take pictures if you want.

-Paul

Carl, I had a 1995 keyed Excel D-10 which was a great guitar for lightness, ease of changing copedant, and staying in tune. I was fine with the tone. Also had a D-10 1996 which was similar. I also played one at Jeff Newmans' school in the mid- 1980 and was happy with it.
Does the seller have any photos you can put up for us? How much does the buyer want? The only drawback might be getting parts for the older guitar but as was mentioned above, Scotty 's Music sells Excels. Good luck, steve t

Hi Carl,
My experience with different steels is very limited. I like my Excel a lot, but I am strictly a hobbyist.

It stays in tune just great. Like anything else, you have to get it dialed in.
The weight is fairly light for a D10. I think it is 56 pounds in the box.
The pedal action is also very easy.
The strings are 0.333" apart, which translates to a string spacing of 3" center to center outside.

The original 1976 Excel pickups on mine are very dark. That must have been a 70's thing, because the pickups are single coils wound to 22K. It's a useable sound, just won't set your teeth on edge. Not sure what yours would be like. Check to see if the pickup mounting is interchangeable with anything. That will affect you if you want to change out pickups.

If you plan on modifying it, be aware it's all metric. I have some workarounds in that department if you need them.

A couple of years ago I thought about getting a newer steel. I couldn't find a design I liked better and they were almost all way heavier in my price range.

Hope this helps.

I have played Excel on the road for the last three years and in my opinion there is no better guitar as far as weight, playability, staying in tune and tone. I have two D10 8+8's and an S10 3+4 that I use when on tour over seas. I was in TOKYO last year and tried to visit Matsuo at his shop, but he was out of town. I have a very bad back problem but I can handle the S10 with ease. L.M.
