The other day I decided I needed better computer speakers to play the Band-In-The-Box tracks. I went to a local electronics supplier and the computer speakers seemed overpriced and not high quality and that even included the Bose brand. I remembered the studio speakers I have heard in sound studios that sound engineers listen to when they play audio tracks back for editing or mixing. Upon visiting a Guitar Center I found some KRK studio speakers. They have built in amplifiers like JBL PA speakers. They are twice the quality and sound great. They cost about two thirds of what the computer speakers cost. These particular ones were the KRK 6's. They have smaller ones and larger ones available.

I have both a 2.1 computer speaker system (Phillips) and a set of Samson Resolv 6.5a studio monitors, as I also use the PC for my recording studio using Sonar. I normally run the studio monitors from my recording interface unit (mostly a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40) but I have a speaker switch that I can switch them to the PC.
The PC speakers are very good quality (and were relatively inexpensive, bought at Sam's Club).
I like both as I mixdown using the studio monitors but I also playback on the PC's speakers to see what it sounds like on "consumer" speakers (I also test mixdowns on other speakers including a cheap "boombox").
Band in a Box generates MIDI sound and requires a decent MIDI Synth or it will sound like crap. The built in Windows "Microsoft GS Wavetable" MIDI synth is not very good. The Roland software synth that comes with many versions of BIAB is much better. If you have a SoundBlaster Sound Card, most of those have hardware MIDI synth and those are very good.
Although I haven't tried it yet, I've seen postings that I can use one of the VST MIDI synths that is included with Sonar for BIAB. They are excellent MIDI synths. |

I have the KRK 5's with a KRK 10S sub (package deal). I think they do sound quite good for the money. |

the self powered 5 6 or 8 inch KRK's are the best bang for the buck .. I own Mackie .. JBL .. Peavey .. and the KRK's sound as good if not better than ones costing
6 times as much .. the 5's are only 149 ea. right now at gtr center .. you cant loose on a pair. |
