"Rhythm of the Waves" and "Waikiki is Good Enough For Me" are two comprehensive collections of pre-WWII Hawaiian guitar music originally compiled by Beer Records. Thanks a lot for sharing these, Basil!

I'm downloading the third one (mysteriously named "Basil Henriques.zip") to see what it might contain.

Absolutely Brad, Whilst I'm not in league with the "lady" above, I don't think that these collections are available commercially any-more, so I felt the need to share them (Just for Educational and documentary research purposes)

The Mysteriously named file will remain mysterious 'till you download it..then it'll be a plain as day..
The title is self explanatory.
As "Wally P." says It's "Mr Grumpy"

I THINK the "Waikiki is Good Enough For Me" file is corrupted so I'm uploading another to replace it..Long process though, it's over 600Mb even when zipped!!

SOON as I upload a working file..2-3hours wait I'm afraid..

Be aware that there is a limit of 50 downloads for these files.. so it's the first 50 who get THIS batch..

I suppose it'll soon be done.. THEN I can upload some more goodies..

Like the Hawaiian Music 100 (5 disc set of Japanese CDs)

And we (the aficionados) can in an Educational spirit examine the contents and see if we can identify the players, just for "EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES"

Thanks Steve, and Wally, the set is a 5 CD set that I bought from Japan, it's no longer available, BUT I will have it uploaded by the morning..

LANGUAGE POPULAR VOCALS RECORDED IN INDIA 1926-1954

Compiled by Ross Laird from original research.

The following is an annotated list of sources which were used in compiling this discography:

1. 78rpm records in my collection

2. Indian record catalogues

I have various Indian Columbia & HMV catalogues of the 1940s. I have not seen any Indian
catalogues from the 1920s or 1930s so there is every possibility some so far unknown items may
be listed in such publications. In particular, I have not seen any complete catalogues for The Twin
label and this is one area where my information is necessarily very incomplete. I also have some
Indian 78rpm catalogues of the 1950s but by this time most earlier Western-style music recorded
in India had been deleted and very little new material was being recorded.

3. E.M.I. file documents

3.1 List of matrices assigned in the HM “NE” series

The HMV “NE” series ran from NE200 to NE897 (1934-1952) and was used for material that did
not already have an existing HMV catalogue number in one of the British series (“B”, “BD”, etc.).
As such most issues in this series are Indian or American recordings plus a few from various
European sources.

This document is headed “Calcutta Branch” and appears to have been compiled from file cards
held by EMI India. Details consist of simply catalogue number and matrices assigned (with no
artist credits or titles) but its is comprehensive as far as it goes. During the early 1940s wartime
conditions seem to have led to some sloppy record keeping and many couplings have no file
cards detailing the matrices used. Otherwise this is an important source of data.

3.2. Copies of ledger sheets indicating matrices allocated for part of HMV “N4000” series. This
covers N4196 to N4499 (1932-1943). Only partial details are given - catalogue number, matrices
allocated, artist credit, dialect [ie. English language or an Indian dialect], date listed & date
deleted.
For some unknown reason, significant parts of these ledgers are blank but this is still a highly
valuable and interesting document which supplies otherwise unavailable data.

4. Correspondence

Helpful information in relation to this research was also obtained via correspondence with Suresh
Chandvankar, Rainer Lotz, John Payne, Jehangir Dalal, Michael Robertson & Marco Pacci.

My justification for posting these is:-
I have almost every Hawaiian record there is..Pre 1980..
I have at least 5,000 albums Vinyl and CD plus hundreds of DVDs thousands of 45rpm Hawaiian Singles and over 1,000 78's.

Those few that I posted just scratch the surface, BUT before I'm gone I'll pass them on to one and all..

They are NOT going to be bequeathed to the Bishop Museum to be left to rot in some basement like other collections I know have been..No way Jose'.

I once bought the contents of a few Jukeboxes in Hawaii and amongst the records were a couple of 49th State that are NOT in the catalogue..

Most of my Vinyl and shellac records are now parted out to collectors and all I have is scans of the artwork/sleeves and mp3s of the content..

I HAVEN'T parted out my 10" collection or my 45s.

I will post the Alfred Apaka Collection tomorrow, with some of my early 10" 33rmpm ones like :

"Blue Hawaiian Moonlight" Decca DL-5477, and

"My Isle of Golden Dreams" Sung by the Andrews Sisters and Alfred Apaka with Danny Stewart and his islanders.Decca DL-5423, and

"Holiday in Hawaii" DannyKuaana Capitol H169, and

"Hawaii Calls" Webley Edwards presents with Al Kealoha Perry. Capitol CLP-042, and

"Favourite Hawaiian Songs" Bing Crosby Brunswick LA-8730, and

"le Sacre Du Sauvage" Les Baxter and his Orchestra Capitol LC-6543, and

Mike Cooper & Cyril, Leffebvre "Aveclei Uptown Hawaiians" Chabada OH-18,

and other 10' Lp's from my collection..

After seeing what you had already made available earlier today, it made me ask myself, "What is Basil going to do with what must be a massive collection of music?". Now I know.

I'm starting to think about what I'm going to do with my own collection of about 600 LPs, a couple of hundred 45's, a few 78's, cassettes and hundreds of CDs. Almost all of which is Hawaiian. You really do take on a sense of needing to make sure the music gets passed on so it can be heard. So it will still live on and become known by as many people as possible. The music will always live on.

You have certainly done more than most, in seeing that this is a reality.
