More than one...
From the time I was 10, I played 6 string. As I got older, I developed a philosophy that was more logical than fun. I used to think that ONE of each kind of guitar would be OK. By that I mean ONE classical nylon string, ONE really good Steel String and ONE electric. That way, I could play in a band or pit orchestra and make the sound that folks expected. Then, I got into steel. What an instrument! Learned more about music theory playing the steel than in all my time in school. I was going to say I have 2 steels, but I actually have 3 and didn't realize it until I started this post! I have an old MSA Classic in parts in storage! Here at home, I have a Fessy U-12 w/ 5 levers 7pedals that I'll soon be selling-when I find the knee lever part I lost in my move to New Mexico, and an MSA Millennium U-12 w/ 5 levers and 8 pedals that I'm sort of married to.
I still don't know how many instruments I'll need, but I can say that I'm having more fun on the steel than I've had musically in a LONG, long time.
Love the Forum!

how many
2 should be enough except for the EXPERIMENTAL one ..
One for the practice room one for the road and one
for that tuning you always wanted to try .. Naturally
you could have one of each just to find the sound you
need for a particular recording. One Zum, Sho bud, Emmons, MSA, Williams, BMI, Anapeg well the list goes on. Happy is the man who dies with the most toys .. or so my wife thinks ..

Joey, a friend gave me the Maverick a few years back. I took all the pedals off and use it as a ten string non pedal with Tom Morrell's E13th tuning. I actually played it for my set at the Dallas show last year and have done a few western swing sessions with it.
