I was never married to Wanda de Fretes (whom I know quite well) – her late father was the one-and-only super great steel-guitarist, George deFretes.
I was also credited with “starting” the Mena Muria Minstrels of the late Rudy Wairata, another friend of mine – it’s the other way around Rudy started the “Mena’s” and I joined the group as the rhythm guitarist. That was back in 1953 right after Rudy arrived in the Netherlands. We knew each other in Jakarta and Bandung (Java-Indonesia) where we started “the Raindrops” a three-part close harmony” vocal/instrumental group: Rudy on ukulele, Tjak Salakori – guitar and me on upright bass. That was during 1948-1950. At that time I also played steel for a group named Suara Maluku. Rudy did’nt dare to play steel because his repertoire was strictly (Tjoh) George de Fretes – that changed when he arrived in the Netherlands in 1953. To make a very long story – very short: I’ve played steel-guitar since 1948 and that is 62 years ago.
I will be 79 this coming February and still very active on steel-guitar with one of the very best Hawaiian musicians I have ever known. They Are: Mapuana Ebbitt – Vocals/Ukulele, Ty Olopy – Vocals, Guitar/Ukulele, Matt Stevens – Vocals/Bass and myself on Steel guitar. What I consider the “very best” is mainly because we copy no one – we’re pure and original in our arrangements and above all we enjoy what we’re doing. I am proud to say also that slowly and surely we have established ourself in South Florida. The group’s name is KAHANU ‘ALA. We recently did the annual HAWAIIAN HOLIDAY show at the ARTSPARK at YOUNG CIRCLE in Hollywood, Florida and prior to that opened the Hawaiian Show in Orlando for the Makaha Sons of Niihau,
A visiting group from Hawaii. I am involved in all the Hawaiian Halau’s in Southern Florida: The Drums of Polynesia, Ohana Arts, Tama Kaleo-Hawaiian Revue and the Polynesian Production Hawaiian Show. Other than that I personally keep a very low profile, Which s fine with me, but I will let it be known that I also doing at least 50% of all the background Steel-Sounds of SpongeBob as well as several Hawaiian Travel Channel programs and many commercials showing a tropical background such as cosmetics, car commercials, etc. etc. These background “sounds” are all “Pirated” without my permission and/or knowledge from several recordings I did in the past. (That is a REAL LOW PROFILE). I must however mention that my own steel-style is primarily based on the late greats Sol Hoopii and Andi Aiona: 1935 – 1945.

Most enlightening, forum member Gary Brandin always said he didn't do all the work on the Spongebob series.
If I was Edward (Ekualo) Mayer I'd be chasing the owners of the show for royalties. They would be quite substantial,(The royalties not the owners) in fact if taken to litigation, they could be quite a lot more than if the show's owners had paid up initially. Or is it that it's "Stock Library" material and has already had the copyright details taken care of.? Edward should join ASCAP or some writer's association IMHO.(If he owns that material)
Wanda was in Chanos to receive her father's European Steel Guitar Hall of Fame award last September, but she never talked of Edward Mayer..'though she did mention a lot of players on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar scene in the USA..?
I VERY interested in finding out just how an "Hawaiian Group" can play Hawaiian music and at the same time say "we copy no one" surely their repertoire must come from some definitive versions of the songs they do, or is it that they play their own compositions, "Hawaiian Style"
I must admit he's relatively unheard of over here..
Except for this recording, which would also lead one to believe that the ownership of his recordings lies with the record labels involved, we all know the artist's arrangement with Maple records, they pay, you play, and a session fee is all you get. Fair enough if that's what you agree to, the speculator deserves the profit (if any).

Sylvia Mayer and the South Sea Hawaiians made a record in Holland.. That was Edwards wife.
