Subject: Looking for musicians who played in the house bands at the Riverside Rancho and Town Hall Party

Hi,

I'm writing a feature for the June issue of the LA Times Magazine on LA Honky Tonks, from the Riverside Rancho through the Palomino. I found your site when I was trying to find out if Cliff Crofferd was still alive (unfortunately not).

I'm trying to find contacts for musicians who played at these late, great clubs and hopefully a regular or two, who may have danced at any of these venues during their glory days.

Many thanks,
Elisabeth Greenbaum Kasson

If you were a player during the heyday of LA honky tonks, you can contact Elisabeth at 65ebgb56@sbcglobal.net.

Did you know / or do you remember a fellow by the name of Bob McCollum ?? , he played bass -- I know he played the Palomino club , Im sure he played the others as well -- Bob is in his 90’s and I have several folks tracking him down to relay this post from b0b -- he always had grate stories about those days

I can't place Bob McCullum. However, if his musical careerwas here in So. Calif., I'm sure we must have played with a lot of Guys we both knew. Is he still out in the So. Calif. area?

Bob was a So Cal Boy , ( I'm sure you have met ) He went to Huntington park High school -- If I remember what he told me about the Palomino club , the Fender Guitar Co. ask him to try out there new electric bass wile working there -- I guess he had to learn how to play it , he played a bull & still does . He also was/is a song writer - some one back in 1941 reordered one of his songs called " Herding the Cattle " -- His sister is in some hall of fame ( I don't remember which ) she did sound affects - bird call's etc. a comic act if you will . - I know he has played at Tex Williams place out near Palmdale - Last i saw Bob was a couple months ago at an Old time Fiddlers jam , his hearing's not good any more but he is still having fun -- there's a Fiddle jam today , I might be able to catch him there .

I played at Tex William's Village in Newhall for the last couple of months it was open. A new Freeway took it out. Bob could well have been playing Bass. Billy Armstrong was running the Band but I can't remember who else was in the Band.

I just copied her E-Mail address from Bob's post and then inserted in in my own E-Mail to her.

Highlight her E-Mail address. hit Control-C

Insert it in your E-Mail to her and Hit Control-V

Worked for me !

I went by the old Riverside Rancho after my wife and I visited my parents' graves at Forest Lawn. I wanted Kathy to see where Spade and Tex played.

The building is gone, and there's a bunch of apartment complexes there now.

Herb, same thing happened to me a couple of years ago when we went by the site of the old Foothill Club on Cherry Ave where Cliff Crofford (who the lady mentioned) played for many years. Nothing but apartments and maybe condos. Even Bonnie Price's big old house that was behind the club was gone. Sometimes I wish I hadn't have gone by there and saw that!...... Time marches on!.......JH in Va.
