Does anyone know what the make of steel this is?
The grandson of the late Lanny Mempa has it for sale.
It was "custom made" for lanny who is now passed.

Those were made by MCI & EMCI I believe.

MCI Rangexpander- Still have my twin ten-superb instrument!
I'm pretty sure if you immersed it in freezin' cold water, then stuffed it in the
oven for a couple of hours, then took it out into the rain, then brought it in to a
very humid atmosphere at a gig, when it had recovered from all that-
IT WOULD STILL BE IN TUNE !! (I may have exaggerated just a little for effect!) _________________ Nice ZUM 12 D9 2 Roland Cubes,+ various effects and bits. |

The later version of the MCI, which had a welded frame had a reputation of being one of the best steel guitars built,at least during the short life of the Company.
The originals I think were bolted together in the corners which caused some problems.
I feel 99% sure you have the improved version. The last one I saw was at Bobbe Seymour's store. One of the top Nashville players had traded it in but missed it so much he came and bought it back I was told.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think Bud Carter went with the company when they first started up in Waco TX. This was during the era between MSA's original operation and their new operation which of course is still in business.
You have yourself a "keeper" If you decide to sell it should bring a premium price. |

Yes, Bud Carter was with MCI. I did some part-time assembly there after he left to start Carter guitars. Gene Fields worked there and Red Rhodes did some pickup design about the time that Buddy Emmons got involved and became the "E" in EMCI. I think the name change was "requested" by MCI the phone company.
I'm pretty sure that Gene came up with the idea of welding the bodies, which he later carried over to his GFI guitars. _________________ Jim Smith
