Jazz Steelers in Sacramento?

Post by Joseph Carlson »

I have been getting back into playing jazz standards on regular guitar and thought it would be cool to jam with a steeler who likes playing out of the Real Book. I have also been playing with an upright bassist as a duo and I think another instrument might help fill out the sound.
The primary focus would be playing for fun and improving as players, although I'm sure we could line up a restaurant or coffee shop gig if we built a big enough song book. Might be cool to find a good drummer too.

Email me at deluxe68 @ msn.com <- (take out the spaces)

Regards,
Joe

I'm still looking for a steeler in Sacramento who wants to play Real Book tunes. There's got to be one somewhere!

Joe

Which version of the Real Book are your working from? I might be interested but I want to look at the book first.

Hi Paul,

I just saw your reply today!
Sorry about that. We've been working out of a few different books, but mainly the old bootleg version, commonly called version 5 I think. But we also use the Chuck Sher ones and the new legal Hal Leonard ones. Mainly depends on the tune.
Anyway, here are some recordings we did at a practice a while back:

Let me know if you want to swing by!

Still looking

I thought I'd revive this old thread.
I've been playing some trio gigs again. Still loking for a Jazz Steeler interested in playing some jazz.
No need to be a virtuoso. Mainly just for fun.

Here's some videos of my trio from a while back:

Tell me a couple songs to work on and I'll see what I can come up with. I have lots of fake books now.

Thanks for the song list Joe. I'll start working on it. I'll let you know when I feel confident enough to play at least a few of the songs. This is a great challenge for me. Just what I need.

If there is any other steel player that is interested in what Joe is doing, don't hold back because of me. I may never get a handle on this material enough to meet Joe's needs.
