Here is an early 60s recording of Dave Musgrave singing "The Other Woman". This is several years before Ray Price cut the song.
And this is probably even earlier than composer Don Rollins' version.
The Musgrave and Rollins versions were both done in Phoenix.
The Musgrave version was unreleased and survives only as an acetate. Here is the label shot.
Question: is this the well-known steel playing Dave Musgrave, who I think was certainly around in that era?
The steel playing on the song is very much a la Mooney, but I am wondering if it's Dave???
Any advice or speculation welcome. I have no idea if Dave the steeler is a singer.

Jack:
Thanks for responding!
Yeah, I thought it was a good version of a classic tune also. He does the tune more like Ray later did it, while the Don Rollins version is more in a Buck Owens vein.
Can you confirm Dave the steeler spent time in AZ and do you know of any other vocal recordings?
Relay the mp3 to Dave if you can. |

Dave indeed spent time around Phoenix. Back in the 1980's I used to get him to set in for me on some local gigs when he was available. I also worked some with his Dad, Cliff Musgrave who lived just outside of Payson, AZ. What neat folks!! The whole family was great. I cannot confirm that the singer on the clip is our Davey Musgrave, but it possibly could be!

Dave was one of the guys that got me hooked on this crazy instrument. He was traveling around with Shot Jackson doing demonstrations for Sho Bud, and they put on a demo at the Tulsa State Fair in about '71 or '72. Wow, I had never heard such music come from a steel guitar. I'm still hooked, almost 40 years later. _________________ Darvin Willhoite
MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

The story I thought I heard a few weeks ago was that Dave sang it instead of the writer. Kind of a last minute deal. Dave is definately one of the best kept secrets in the innovation of not only steel guitar but country music as well...PLUS he's a hoot to be around... _________________ D-10 JCH Dekley U-12 D-8 Magnatone Mullen RP Evans RE 200 profex 2 BJS bars

Ahh-haaaa!
Thanks Jack. Suspicions confirmed. Please compliment Dave on his pipes.
How accurately can you date this recording?
The Ray Price version is from March, 1965. The Don Rollins and Dave Musgrave versions are prior to that, but I can't find more precise dates.
I'd guess Dave's version precedes Rollins. |
