Operation Russless- 1st & 2nd Quarter Winners

Post by Laney Hicks »

Sorry to have taken so long to post this information, but I've thought long and hard about this and decided that we'll have to disqualify Alma McCoy, as it was revealed that Alma has indeed played the main stage in St. Louis. (Shame on you, Alma)

Man, this is harder than I thought it would be! I've chosen two players to represent our 1st and 2nd quarters and they are:

1st Quarter:
JEREMY DRAWBAUGH, submitting "Mr. Record Man"

2nd Quarter:
CONNIE BURTON, submitting "All Wrapped Up In You"

Congratulations! And, thanks for entering!

to everyone who has already entered:
you are still in this contest!

to everyone else who's interested:
get those tapes and cd's in!

Gosh, Laney, be merciful, I just don't see how anybody can follow Alma's act on "A Love Like This" now - what with all the good notes in that entire song already taken and everything....

I mailed out my own stab at Mr. Record Man today, it may not be a contest winner but I hope it brings a laugh or two at least.

Back to our friend Alma, I have to say that THAT is tone the way it can be. Please Mr. Randy Beavers can you let us know if Alma's Fender rig was used in the recording of "A Love like This" or what? Beautiful use of a fine guitar and great-sounding signal chain - whatever it was, it's my new favorite steel guitar song in the whole world and likely to stay so for a while. Four notes into it and I'm done for the day....

And speaking of which, Laney, are there many of those "Pranksters" CD's left for sale? What a fabulous collection of great steel guitar performances, iun addition to Russ's great work there's a real fine no-pedal song in there from Don Helms and die-hard John Hughey fans will not be disappointed, either. Larry Sasser and Randy Beavers both tear it up, Joe Wright and Johnny Cox - wow! Great stuff also from Mike Sweeney and Ron Elliott and anyone who hasn't yet listened to Doug Jernigan will have to sit up straight and pay attention...and then, just when you think it's all been done, our dear Alma (played here by Lloyd Green) closes the book WITH AUTHORITY. Throughout it all, of course, soars Laney's wonderful clear voice bringing it all home to the heart. New pickers and old should have a copy of that one, it's a keeper for sure....
[Edited to correct an unacceptable gaff - see below]

[This message was edited by Dave Grafe on 24 February 2006 at 11:57 AM.]

Thank you Mike S., you are correct and I am not, it was Doug Jernigan, not Mike Perlowin, that made all those lovely sounds. My apologies for all that may have been affected, I have edited the original post accordingly.

I think it was maybe syllabic count or something that got into my head last night, it would have helped to get out the CD and actually READ IT when composing that shameless boost for a very fine collection instead of counting on my (admittedly obsolescent and fading) memory cells. Nothing worse than high-jacking a topic and then getting the facts wrong!

Way to go Jeremy. I'm proud of you. If you don't know Jeremy is my son, and yes my chest is sticking out. Jeremy has it goin' on playing all that Tommy White and Randy Beavers stuff, Oh and all that Russ Hicks stuff too. Image But, this is no surprize to me I've been a fan of Jeremy's playing all his life. This should be a heads up to all you Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee Steel Guitar clubs, you need to put Jeremy on your shows. If you don't your members are missing a great young talent. Jeremy can pick and sing. If only he looked as good as he picks I would have a superstar in the family.
