| I like to add a little dirt sometimes for bluesy stuff, how does that go over with a 400? |

| Hi Tim, I used 400's for years, great loud clear steel amps. I went through a lot of pedals. I think the important thing is not to overdrive the amp, but get whatever tonal quality you want from the box. There's certainly a variety of pedals out there - - Fulltone OCD is a cool pedal that I use with tube and solid state amps. Have fun experimenting! |

| Hey Bobby, did you go through a lot of pedals trying to find one that sounded good? I used to have an OCD but I sold it, still got the Analogman Sun Face and Blues Driver, and what I'm using now is a Fulltone Fat Boost into a Zendrive2. Sounds pretty nice with a tube amp... |

You certainly know the tone you want..that is probably a great combo!
I'm certainly happy playing through a Marshall DSL 100-watter for the past few years. I never could get what I was chasing when playing the Peaveys, for other than pretty regular steel tones, and the Marshall is more what I'm looking for in a 6-string amp. I like the OCD but I am probably going to get a Fat Boost too, so it's good to hear you use one to good effect!
Started playing guitar and steel in the early 1970's with blackface Fender amps, usually a pair of Vibrolux and Pro, dimed out LOL. Trying to keep up with the stacks other guitarists always had. I guess I used Peaveys (I blew up a few!) from the mid-1980's through the turn of the century, so the pedals available at the start were not as varied. I still have 2: Boss Heavy Metal HM2, Ibanez Metal Charger MS10. The charger is over-the-top version of the tube screamer, but the Boss HM2 is surprisingly able to get a subtle overdrive with a SS amp.
I was interested in the "British" SansAmp for going to gigs where a backline is provided...you ever try one of those? I think one was for sale recently on the forum. |

I never tried a Sansamp. What I'm looking for is a combo amp, everybody here seems to like the Peaveys for steel so I thought I'd try one. There's one for sale here local on Craislist.
Right now I'm using a 100 watt Reeves head and a 2x12 Dr.Z cab, sounds great but I thought it might be nice to have something a little more portable. |

| I'll clarify I used both Session and Nashville 400's. Both are great PSG amps. I think the Session has a little more mids character, and the Nashville a little clearer with more bottom. If you can get a Session in good shape, it should be a good acquisition, as people continue to like them. I've still got a nice one with the original "made for Peavey" JBL's. |

| i've used ,with my 400, an ibanez stomp box called a 'fat cat'. Ibanez FC10 ...works great for what i use it for. not too extreme. used it for decades. |

| You aren't going to find anything as good sounding as your Reeves with a Session 400 or any other transistor amp in terms of dirt. That said, the best 'dirt' pedal I have heard against transistor amps is the Seymore Duncan Twin Tube. The FullTone pedals and others like the Zen drive sound great against tube amps, but the Twin Tube sounds better against something like a Session 400. IMHO. |

Well, I went and bought that 400 today, I like it! Haven't had a whole lot of time with it just playing, but the Mullen gets a better tone up high with the Peavey than the Reeves for some reason.
Maybe I just need to tweak the eq on the Reeves, I don't know, but this Peavey sounds like the way a steel is supposed to sound, to my ears.
Only problem is, the reverb doesn't work. I looked in the tank and re-soldered one of the wires that was loose. I can hear the springs crashing when I shake the amp, now, but it doesn't give a reverby delay after the note for some reason. |

After I played my Sho-Bud through an overdriven tube amp there was no turning back.

| Electroharmonix makes two tube overdrives which work well with SS amps also the mesa tube floor unit is great depending on what kind of distortion you are lookin for. |
