Good Ole' Boy

Well, I don't know what to day; you just get better and better. If you are coming to Dallas, bring all that good playing with you and when you go home, leave that good playing for me.
Take care and have a Merry Christmas!

I am convinced that it is his very long thumbs that give him that encredible tone.

I loved it, and couldn't help but sit here with the big cheesy grin on my face through the whole thing. I heard some Green, I heard some Emmons, and a whole lot of David Hartley. A lot of really good stuff. :-) :-) :-)

The thumb, and palmistry?

Post by David Hartley »

It is true -- the thumb is the part of the body which distinguihses man from animal. A large part of the brain's computing power is dedicated to controlling the thumb. Therefore, you can see the importance of the thumb in reading the personality, via the science of Palmistry. The position in which the thumb sits in the hand can be intrepreted as representative of character by those who know how. For example, a thumb set too high can indicate idiocy. (Remember that the thumb's usefulness comes from being offset at a 90-degree angle from the other fingers, thus enabling mankind to manipulate the world and build objects.) A thumb set high (rather than too high) is often said to represent lack of adaptability (the individual misses out on the power of an offset thumb.) A low thumb, meanwhile, denotes generosity and intelligence.

I must have a low thumb then!

I won't tell you what the google results were about long thumbs but it didn't mention tone!

New Member?

There is nothing new I can say about your playing that hasn’t already been said.
However I must compliment you on your much improved video quality.
I was looking at some of your original videos and the quality was fair but now you are getting some serious appearing videos.
Great clear quality picture and the multiple camera angles is a real treat.
By the way is that a new family member we see running around in the yard and laying near the fireplace?
Thanks David for the total package.

Hi

Post by David Hartley »

David Wright. I use logic pro 8 as the recording suite on the apple. More info is here http://www.thebritishsteeliessociety.co ... ?f=22&t=38. C6th, yes, i have ideas in my head but haven't got on it much yet. I have recorded it on a French western swing session but it took me many takes to get it right. To be honest, it's not natural for me to pick around on it and when I watch and listen to anyone playing it, I just don't understand how their heads get around playing the licks and runs and tunes. It's always there though for when I fancy a pick on it but it does feel like a completely different instrument to me still.

Michael. Yes that's 'Texas', my Akita. It's just me and him living here so the song was played for him. Ha. He is a good old boy, and he's only 2 years old. He often sits outside on a garden chair. I tried to catch that on video but he always jumps off it when I go outside and runs around. It's funny to see when he is in his chair. Yes, it's all Hd multiple cameras to get angles now. It's experimental at the moment using apple final cut but soon it's all going back outside in the green video room. I haven't used it yet since I prepared it. It all keeps me amused I suppose, there's not many gigs these days here so I am getting some new tracks done and only just started playing steel again after a break from it. Like we all do, I got fed up with it all for a while and haven't played it for a few weeks. I kinda find a little break does you good every now and then anyway. This song is one of Frans tracks that she sings. A Chely Wright song of course. It was recorded in one take which I was pleased about. After the break from playing, I thought I would be missing a few more notes than I did. It did take about 4 hours to edit the video as I am still learning the software.

Bill, many thanks, the BJS bar sparkles in places i noticed on the video. The John Hughey bar is my favorite, everyone should have one. It has so much sustain and is easy to pick up off the strings when you need to when jumping to new fret positions. Drop me an email and tell me how you're getting on.

Many thanks everyone for your comments.

I would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas. I am really looking forward to Dallas. I just hope there's no snow in March. The airports have been closed again today due to an inch or two of snow again. We are really not prepared for snow in the UK. I am OK though, I have a full coal bunker, a full pantry and fridge and home made beer too! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. :D
