Bud Carter and I have used Ernie Ball string for years for several reasons, I will not get into that at this time.

Which strings stay in tune the best? I know some guitars do not return true, and if you live in Alaska the temp is not your friend and some strings seem to have more or less tension vs other strings at the same pitch. All of that aside...

Larry I have tried a lot of different strings over the years but I changed to Jagwires about 6 or 7 years ago and have found them to be the most consistent and durable strings I have every used...I experience practically no breakages at all and they stay in tune extremely well.

I agree with you, Paddy. I am using some now that have been on since July and they still sound good. Only broke 2. And they get played. Jack

Frenchy's Silent series strings stay in tune better than any I used before. Great tonal quality also. Jody.

What Billy said. I settled on Cobras after trying many different kinds, including Jags (fine strings, for sure). But with the Cobras, besides staying in tune, and a tone I prefer above the others, they never seem to need changing. I do change them, but I always feel I'm throwing away perfectly good strings.

The post wrap and the tuner key have nothing to do with the guitar staying in tune ?

The body of the guitar ? Temp of the room ? Temp of the guitar coming in from outside ?( Alaska) Transporting the instrument etc...

just thinking out loud...

Now we have strings that stay in tune longer ?

How long are we wanting our "tune" to stay intact without touch-up..? 1 gig, 2 gigs, 2 weeks, 4 weeks ? 6 months, a year ?

I know we have some that have strings last 2 years , no 3rd strings breaking in 2 years ( it's not dead ?) and now we have Steels staying in tune forever because of the string brand ?

I'm hear to tell you, if you have an instrument that doesn't hold tune or very close to tune for a reasonable amount of time it ain't the strings !

sorry... someone had to ask...

so why do we carry a tuner, all we need is brand x strings !

Do we not check our tuning every set ? ...it is a mechanical device ya know, I don't expect a $.50 string to last forever, a few weeks at best and primarily for the fresh tone.

Now we will have posts/threads with "I use other brand X strings and never had a problem with breakage or staying in tune for 2 years" or more..or less..

You knew this was coming

t

PS, with regard to changing strings..
the primary reason for changing strings on a very regular basis is to preserve your TONE, whatever it is..tone starts at the strings. "CONSISTENCY"

Once strings start to have fatigue, the overall tone will change, and you will be chasing tone with your amp settings or whatever...Once your right hand starts touching the strings, natural skin oils begin to settle...On the 6 string it's both hands...transferring natural skin oils to the strings.

With Pedal Steel guitars , changing strings on a regular basis is also a preventative measure for the effects of PHYSICS which begins as soon as you mash pedal A or B...

Changing strings often ( my take ) is about preserving tone first and durability second, and maybe the other way around for others, but regardless, it's two for one.

Cobras for me all the way. Not only do they hold their tuning, but they very rarely break.

I use SIT Strings and like them fine.
No problem-o
Good Price.
We buy em in bulk and split them up.
I'm sure they are not as good as those fancy ones.
I have to check them every day due to the cheap-ness and low quality.

Another vote for Cobra Coils staying in tune better, sounding lively longer and breaking much less! However, I broke a 10th string at the changer a couple of weeks ago Whoa! The core let loose and it just kind of unraveled. Anyone ever break a 10th string Question

Larry,Were the Cobras the ones that have a black paint looking finish on the plain strings?

My personal take on this:
On a scale of 1-100 with 100 being perfect (nothing is perfect) for staying in tune I rate them as follows:
Cobra Coils: 97
Jagwires:96
Every other brand of string known to mankind: (pretty much at least):94-95
I would rather have a new set of Ernie Balls then a month old set of Cobras.

Thom--I broke a 10th once, but only once, and so far I've never broken another Cobra string.

The 10th string on my Stage One came unraveled at the changer a while ago, the only string to break so far. I replaced it with a similar gauge string from a guitar set. I'm planning on replacing the set with Jagwires because of their reputation and also to support a Michigan business.

Robert Randolph used to break his low strings (equivalent to the low C on C6th) all the time. Not sure he still does. But he has a pretty aggressive 'touch'.

We all have our favorite strings so it is all just opinions. I am currently using Curt Mangan strings and I don't think there is any brand better.
