Great Stuff Doug, I like that a lot and you can see from the replies here what an encouragement you are to the newcomers.

Keep it up.

Ghost Riders...

Post by Jay Seibert »

On a slightly different note... pun intended... many of you might know that Ghost Riders was written by a great cowboy songwriter named Stan Jones. Well, right here in the Portland, OR area we have a very talented guy who happens to be Stan's nephew... Keeter Stuart!

Keeter's been singin; and writin' great tunes himself for many years now and I am proud to say that I have had the pleasure to play music with him at many a gathering. Keeter has a combo named Trio Bravo and they play at Duff's Garage every Tuesday night from 6 to 9 pm. He'll be there tonight!

So if you have the chance, take the time to go catch Keeter and say "Hello". You'll hear a bunch of Old Stan's great tunes and a bunch of Keeter's award winning originals as well. I guarantee a good time will be had by all.

Thank you for reading,

Jay

Very interesting, Jay. Ghost Riders has been recorded by a lot of singers/bands. According to Robby Krieger, guitarist for The Doors, this song inspired The Doors hit "Riders on the Storm". 8)

Wow Doug, that was great - incredible phrasing! It always looks so foreign to me watching someone play with thumb and finger picks, then I remember that I'm the odd man out, (using a flatpick). How much of that was improvised?

Thanks Steve! You're playing some amazing stuff with your flatpick! I enjoy all of your postings here.

As far as the solo and the improv... I had a general idea of the positions and the areas of the fretboard where I wanted to play the solo, but I didn't work out a note for note solo. Each time I played it, it came out a little different. So I recorded the song a few times and this is the one I kept. thanks again! 8)

Agreed.. VERY cool. Doug is awesome. If I lived closer I would take lessons for sure. I am waiting for his new book which will have this song in it.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. Mitch, I like your Salmon Gibson! What a stunning lap steel.

I'm very excited about the new book, although work has come to a standstill for a month or so. I had hand surgery on Tuesday... my picking hand, index finger. I had "trigger finger". I hope to be picking again in 3 to 4 weeks. I'm itching to play my guitars again!

Your vid and Rick A's of his salmon, convinced me to pull the trigger on one and I'm SO glad I did. What a sweet tone, but growl on demand also !

Prayers your way Doug for a speedy and complete recovery. Merry Christmas to you and yours !

I wish you were a 'left coaster' also, so I could take lessons ! But your book / cd is fantastic and can't wait for more.

Get better soon and post some more great stuff ?

Thanks Marlin, I've always liked this tune, and I've been teaching it to my guitar students for many years. I thought I'd try it on lap steel. It translates well to steel guitar! Thanks again, and have a happy Holiday!

Thanks Peter, I'm recovering from the hand surgery... starting to exercise the hand now. I should be back to picking in a couple of weeks. I have lessons and gigs scheduled right after Christmas. I don't think my finger will ever be "normal" again, but as long as I can pick without pain I'll be happy. Getting old really sucks! :? :) Thanks again for your well wishes, and have a nice Holiday.

Sorry to dredge this back up yet again...but does anyone happen to have an mp3 of Doug's version of this ? I think he's said that he deleted the BIAB file and so I don't think I can get an mp3 from him...but has any else reconstructed his version in BIAB and have an mp3 of it ?
