Uneven raises

Post by Stefan Roller »

Dear Forumites, I've got a problem with the raises on my Pro 1. Every help is appreciated very much.
Strings 6 and 3 do not raise simultaneously. The 3rd raises smoothly during the whole pedal movement. The 6th starts to raise after the pedal travel is halfway through. I thought that the slack at the hexagon nut was too large and tried to fix it by fiddling around with the nut and the rod. Nothing helped, maybe this effort was completely dumb - but I'm a newbie and didn't knew any better :)
Thank you very much in advance - Stefan

Stefan, the 3rd string has to travel pretty far and the 6th travels very little so it is difficult to sinchronize them exactly. The best you can do is put the 6th string pull rod in the hole closest to the cross shaft and at the changer in the hole furtherest from the axle. I am assuming that the 3rd string travel it to your liking.

Are you using a wound or plain 6th string? If you're using a plain string, try a wound 6th...that may solve the problem.

Ryan, I'm using a plain 6th. I'm living in Germany, so I have the choice between 2 - 3 different brands of PSG strings. All of them have plain 6th. Maybe I can switch the 6th to a wound ordinary guitar string, I have to check the gauges.
Thank you ! Stefan

Try a .022w guitar string.

Stefan,

the world is small nowadays, I order my strings from the US. Shipping costs are very low, so don't restrict yourself to strings that you can only buy locally.
That being said, normally it should not be a problem to get both strings to raise almost at the same time.

To overcome this problem (when using a plain 6th string), some manufacturers use a slave cross-shaft to 'gear down' the 6th string raising linkage, so that, at the pedal, there is no 'step' felt when raising strings 3 and 6

Yes, but you don't actually need to add another shaft. You can use a rod puller that is left loose, and turns freely on an existing shaft. A GFI puller would probably work well on an old Sho-Bud.

Problem solved !!!!

Post by Stefan Roller »

Friends of the steel, many, many thanks to all of you who took their time to help me out. Problem solved. It was really as easy as changing to a wound sixth string... the guitar is now raising perfectly (and even the pedal "feel" is better now).
Once again - thanks a lot, to all of you. :D

Stefan, I would be happy to send you strings. I don't think there is any better than these. I would also change out the 6th if you want a wound. I don't know your setup but if you are lowering the 6th a whole tone I don't think you can do it with a wound .022. It is not possible on most guitars without some modification. If you want to try these strings I am sure you will like them as I do.
