Anybody know the story on this unusual Rickenbacher?

It's on eBay right now, more pictures there...

The seller says that, according to "Steel Guitars Nashville", this was a Rickenbacher factory item.

It clearly looks like a post war model.....check the pickup.

The two metal panels near the pickup, do not appear to be matched pieces. In a couple of photo's, they don't appear to be arched as on stock models.

Obviously the installed tone/volume knobs are not standard nor do they appear even to be Rickenbacher knobs.

It would be interesting to see a view of the guitar body from the cut-away side. I wonder what one might be able to see.

Yes, it's postwar and all three of the metal plates look "home-cut" by someone and the knobs are non-original. I can't imagine why part of the body is chopped off... unless it was damaged beyond repair and the owner cut it off and then fabricated some missing parts.

It's a '47-48,etc, with the "T" logo. Sure is hacked up. Good parts would be the neck and pickup assembly, worth maybe 200 bucks max.......
Don'tcha love it when these guys call stuff "RARE" Very Happy
A few years back a BR-9 Gibson was listed as "RARE", so there's about 15,000 RARE BR-9s Very Happy

Looks to me like someone butchered it with the intention of allowing what they thought would be easier access to the higher frets, perhaps even to facilitate playing it with a strap while standing.
A few years ago, I ran across a guy selling several Telecasters, and he had, for some dumb reason, sawed off the lower horn on every one. Said they were "customized", and that he thought they just looked better that way.
Things like this sometimes make me think we should consider registering lutherie tools, instead of handguns.

As the plumber said of the original owner/builder of this house who had managed to hook up our downstairs shower using irrigation fittings instead of copper, "Some guys shouldn't be allowed to touch tools."

What some guitar owners call customizing is actually cobbling!

Some people just can't stop cutting, drilling, and painting.

Maybe it was easier to whack off the part that got in the way than slim that belly down...
