Here is one about Pete Drake. I found this while exploring c. Dixon's "You Gotta See and Hear This" post.

Another famous Steel Guitarist, Alvino Rey , invented the talking Steel Guitar back in the 30's and used it as a novelty with his big Swing Band.
Pete Drake brought it into Country Music years later to new audiences whom had never heard it and incorperated it into recordings of hit songs.

Did Alveno rey not use the volume control to get the talking effect almost like a wow wow pedal? where as Pete Drake used a Talk box that he developed himself.

In an Interview with DJ Bob Powell on London radio in the late 70s (when Pete came to london with Johnny Paycheck to do a promotion for Epic records) pete talked about how he and a doctor friend developed the talk box and also used it for a neighbours child who was unable to speak, was dumb, to enable the child to talk through it.
I have the magazine with the interview in and that is exactly how pete tells the story of the "talk box".

Alan,
There are people on this Forum that know more about
it than I, but Alvino Ray did use a device called
a "Sonovox" to achieve the talking guitar effect with the big band.
The guitar was fed into a pair of headphone like
transducers which one of the King sisters held to
her throat. (She was offstage in front of a microphone) She modulated the sounds which were fed back onto the sound system.
Here is a clip of Alvino from "You Tube.:

Petes adaptation of the technique was a little different and benefited from improved electronic technology.

Hi Blake ,
I was looking for alveno Rey vids and other related posts while I was posting last reply as I wasn't 100% sure but I knew if I were wrong more info would be posted.
I had seen him use the vol control very skillfully on a you tube vid but now you mention the sonovox and yes you are right.

The forum is great for historical fact ....everyones input sorts out the stories that get lost or unintentionally distorted in time.

The pedal steel seems to lends itself to the talking effect better than a lap steel (?) as you dont have to rush along the frets as much, the strings can be pedaled into the words.
Alveno and pete have that similar sound but Petes' words seem more precise and understandable.
