These 2 pictures are screen caps taken from here:

It's Webley Edwards giving the intro to the Hawaii Calls radio show, with the accompanying pictures.

The second picture is the entire cast.

The first picture shows Webley to the right of a Fender pedal steel--I think under the banyan tree at the Moana.

Who is the steeler?

Who are the cast members?

Mitch, the steel player is an easy call, the great Jules Ah See. He died shortly after his boss, Alfred Apaka died in 1960, both were way too young and talented to go. That may be Alfred behind at center with the rolled paper blocking some of his face.

Alvin Isaacs is in both shots, top shot he's at the left, bottom shot he's center with 'Mr. Hawaiian Music' Benny Kalama to his right.

I'll pass on attempting the rest. David, you're up!

Thanks for the Jules ID. The other pix I have of him are earlier and don't really look like the same guy.

I wonder if that is his own steel and if he played it on the Hawaii Calls stage--pedals and all?

That's his, he recorded extensively with it, but I sincerely doubt Web would have let a pedal steel on the island if he could help it!

Certainly not a picture of the gang at the Moana Hotel. Don't forget, Hawaii Calls has broadcasted from other hotels too on occasion.

Ron, that's not Alvin Isaacs in both pics. That's Al Kealoha Perry, who was the musical director for the show.

The second picture looks very much like the Hawaiian Village.

The first picture is less certain, but looks like the banyon tree at the Moana.

These hotels were the other two places where Hawaii Calls programs eminated besides the Moana in the Banyon Tree Courtyard.

Great memories for me seeing and hearing Hawaii Calls in the Banyon Tree Courtyard. Much chicken skin also. Surprised

Aloha, Smile
Don

I guess I'm destined to make that blatant error for all time, as I do it every single time, knowing fully well what AKP and Alvin look like...
If I do it again, screw the roulette part!

Jeff...I'm wondering if Jules ever played pedal on Hawai'i Calls ? ... kinda doubt it. If I am correct, Alan Akaka now has the old Magnatone with Jules name on the case...I'm sure you have seen it ? I think Magnatone gave steel guitars to most every steel player on Hawai'i Calls as a form of getting near world recognition (via short-wave) when Webley would announce "Waves and Magnatone Steel guitars" (or simi). I can vividly recall Barney playing a Magnatone on the show. Smile
