anybody have any suggestions for some wide-grip dexterity exercises? |

Here's what I do:
Choose a lower string as a starting point. You can use your bar or not, it doesn't matter. Pick that string with your thumb and immediately pick the string above it with either your index or middle finger. Pick the lower note again and then the second string above, again pick the lower string then third string above, etc., going up through all of the strings then back down again. Do this for each finger several times. Use a metronome and keep increasing the tempo. |

Try holding 2 cans of beer (or Dr. Pepper) in your picking hand. Drinking from both cans at the same time will also train you to hold your mouth right for those really hard to play licks.

I began using 4 bare fingers and a thumb pick over 30 years ago and devised some exercises that would allow me to stretch out and play very wide voicings such as: I V III VII III (i.e., maj 7th, etc). One exercise that I did was to spread the fingers of the right hand with those of the left; gripping a rubber ball is also good--hold the grip 5 sec before relaxing. |

Lloyd Green's "Bars of Steel". String grips 3, 8 and 10 in the chorus. When you can play this tune fluently, I'd say you'd have a pretty good handle on wide grips. |
