Hard to get a really good look at it, but it may be a Gold Tone banjitar like this one at elderly. Sure looks like it.
Several instrument makers have been building similar things for a few years.

I noticed your Avatar. Totally cool! KOTH (King of the Hill), is one of my favorite shows! Laughing
I even bought the "boxed sets" of the series episodes. Amazon.com, has a great selection...at a great price.

I saw Brad Paisley, on Letterman. Another favorite show of mine. He has an excellent steel player. I never see him look happy, or like he's enjoying himself. Excellent steel player, regardless.

You're Welcome Ron. Interesting instrument.

As to Randle Currie, on the Live on Letterman show, he was smokin' Exclamation He's fast becoming the one all others are trying to catch. Just incredible tone and execution. He makes that Franklin sing. edited: while Ron was posting I believe he's having a good time. He's just interacting and making eye contact with the other musicians.

If I could play like that you can bet I'd be smiling on the inside whether or not it showed on the outside!

Anyway, the banjitar solo that I heard sounded a little weak. Don't know if it was the instrument or the engineer.
I'b be interested to hear a better sample of the instrument's character and color.

The banjitar or ganjo was played by Kendall Marcy, who is Brad's keyboard player. Randle Currie now plays his plum colored Franklin steel, although he once played a paisley-colored MSA at one time. The six string banjo is also used by artists like Keith Urban. Randle played steel for Bryan White until Jim Heffernan left Brad's band. Jim played a Zumsteel with Brad.
