I am not a Tech so.....I have this Peavey 1505 That I pulled out of a Session 500 about ten years ago. I had it re-coned at a local Music Store Back then, and I never used it.Just took it out of the closet and when I push on the cone IN AND OUT...it it very "Scratchy". Would somebody please explain to Me what causes this? _________________ Jory Simmons |

If it's a 1505 it wasn't the original speaker in a Session 500. The speaker that came with those amps was a 1502 BW speaker.
If it's "scratchy" it sounds like the voice coil is touching inside and wasn't reconed correctly. The Peavey Black Widows are not made to be reconed. If the speaker cone goes bad, you remove the magnet assembly from the "basket", get a new "basket" which is the speaker cone part and reinstall the magnet on the new basket. Generally the cost of a new basket is about the same as a recone job. |

What Jack said EXCEPT it is possible to get a perfectly good speaker to "scratch" when pushing it by hand, if the pressure of your fingers is not evenly spread it is very easy to bend the cone enough to make the voice coil rub. Plug it in and crank it up, if it is bad you will still hear the "scratchy" sound, if it sound great at power then it probably is just fine. |

I have checked speakers like you did for years, but when I bought my first Weber, there was a caution not to move the cone by hand. Said I could damage it! |

Well.....First of all.....This speaker was, and I am positve...The original speaker in My 1981 Session 500. I bought it, new, at Roselle Music, in Roselle Il. I changed to a JBL in 1990, Got it re-coned at kenosha Music center in kenosha wi.,when it was sounding fuzzy... and put it away in a box where its been all this time. The first time I put it an amp, it was distorted, But it was so many years later,I had no recourse. Just checked again..and the label on the basket says.. 1505/8ohm.
Very suspicious indeed.....anyhow, I have no use for it, but can't sell it on here in this cond. _________________ Jory Simmons |

I would suspect that when they reconed it, they subbed the 1505 basket on your magnet in place of the original 1501 or 02 and didn't tell you.
A local music store tried that on me because they didn't want to order a 1501 basket, but I caught it when I picked it up and insisted they install the original model basket.
I just noticed you said it was from '81 and that it was distorted the first time you tried to use it after reconing.
If it's one of the old spider web magnets, the later 1505's probably doesn't match the gap. |

IIRC, the 1505 is for an Impulse 1015 pa cabinet. Some times, you can remove the screws from the magnet and move the basket one screw hole to the left or right and the voice coil won't rub. It doesn't work all the time. |

It's possible that the gap has some debris in it. Whenever a basket is replaced, the gap MUST be cleaned out. One tiny fragment can cause that rubbing sound you refer to. _________________ Best regards,
