Curly Chalker/Julian Tharpe New CD Ready

The new CD featuring Curly Chalker and Julian Tharpe is now available at: Dave Burley, Box 211, Franklin, In. 46131.
This is a recording of the individual sets that Curly and Julian did at the Cavalcade Of Guitars session in Dallas, Tx. in 1976. Slam Stewart, the legendary bassist, joins Julian on Danny Boy and it is really something to hear, this legendary jazz bassist with our own Julian Tharpe.
This cd is of a live session so expect to hear all the background noises that you would have heard if you would have been at the concert.
I have posted before that the original master tapes were left at Jack Logans studio in Nashville, Tenn. for safekeeping. Jack has since left us and we have spent 30 years trying to locate the masters with no success. This is not a studio mix but it is quite good and is the first time these sessions have been available to the public.
There is about 35 minutes of some of the greatest legendary steel guitar that you have ever heard.
Imagine both Julian and Curly playing to an audience that included....... Les Paul, Louie Bellson, Tal Farlow, Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Roberts, Herb Ellis, Buddy Emmons, Doug Jernigan and Maurice Anderson, Johnny Gore and Slam Stewart. All legends in both the pedal steel world and the jazz guitar world. Quite a stressful session I would think.
The cd's are $17.00 each which includes shipping and handling. Postal money order preferred but whatever you have will be accepted. The cd will also be available on Ebay within a few weeks.

The pick of Julian was taken when he cut the 12 + 14 L.P. with Zane Beck at or near Birmingham, AL.

Julian was ripping up his 14 stringer BMI and Zane was on his 12 stringer.

I was not there that day but another close friend of mine and Julian's was Cletus Hopkins.

That album by the way was a real piece of history and a mutual friend of all of ours Speedy West wrote the liner notes for it.

I knew all of them and now all gone. I really miss them. What Giants of the Steel Guitar.

Congratulations on the album mr burley, george redmon has an original copy of the 33rpm record,and it's fantastic. This cd should be mandatory for all steel students. Also everyone look at that photograph of the master Tharpe. Notice his posture at the steel? See the look of confidence on his face? Same with steel maestro Emmons, or any of the great steel players. Watch a you tube of maestro Emmons. Pay close attention to how he sits at the steel guitar. Even while just jamming. This is the way to approach steel guitar. While learning violin at a young age, posture was a major part of my musical education. I try to instill this quality in all my violin, and viola students today. Great music Mr Burley, thank you for the contribution and sharing with us all, a must have CD.

All orders were shipped out today. I spent a week in Nashville so got a couple days behind on orders. As far as Pay Pal goes, we do accept it but it has to go through the Ebay site as I cannot accept it myself. If you want, you can go to Ebay, advanced sellers, 1244johns. Send an email to John and he can arrange to take Pay Pal without going through
the other process. Ordering through Ebay costs about $21.00 per cd. Going directly through John the cost will be $17.00 per cd, shipping included if within the U.S. I will notify John to accept personal orders which will save you four or five dollars. Historical cd's available are: Buddy Emmons and Jimmy Bryant live at Rogers Musicland, 'It's The First Time,' nine steel players in the studio at the same time recorded in Nashville in the seventies and Curly Chalker/Julian Tharpe recorded at Dave Burley's Cavalcade Of Guitars in Dallas in the seventies. Live recordings don't expect studio quality. The cd's are good, though, and you will hear licks from the masters who are still considered the master's of the steel guitar today. Thats very wild Dave. I was there with my father Jack Matthews (Steel Player-RIP).We left Magnolia, Arkansas about6PM, got to the Longhorn Ballroom where it was held about 10PM. Things were just getting started, with Johnny Gore MC-ing the event. Music was continuous till about 4:30 or 5 that next morning. What a room full of world class players. Slam Stewart backed up everyone there. He knocked me out when he would scat with his doghouse bass while he bowed it. Truly amazing. And yes Julian & Curly were as well. And of couse Big-E. Les Paul and Bucky Pizarelli were the guitarest, and Bucky played a 7-string. Pretty wild for 1976. I think Bucky and Louis Belson were both playing the Tonight Show at that time.Anyhow I could go on & on about it because it was an event I'll never forget. And yes I want one of those cd's. Thanks for the memories!

Robert....Did you take any pictures? I am in the process of putting together the jam session portion of the concert and could really use a picture of all the musicians when they were on the stage at the same time. So glad to hear you had such a good time. I did too except for the tremendous about of pressure and stress putting that whole thing together.

I'll look thru some of my pops stuff, cause he kept everything like that through the years. I don't guess I realized that you were the one putting it on.
