Have any of you Texas steelers played with Steve Fromholts. I have a recording on tape of his "Late Night Neon Shadows" I really like it.

I've known Steve for 38 years. He's never had a full-time steel player, but I've done gigs with him from time to time. A great songwriter and friend, he's had his share of hard luck health wise, but usually bounces back.

Steven Fromholz put out some amazing records back in the day. Late Nite Neon Shadows was on "A Rumor In My Own Time". One of THE BEST steel solos ever IMHO. Phase Shifter never sounded better. That solo is one of the reasons I play today.

Thank you for bringing Steven back into my focus.
I played my two records from the seventies again and discovered Bears and Late Nite Neon Shadows. These two songs are one the b-side of a record I was evidently only playing the a-side of. It is a 35 year long, not discovered treasure in my own record collection.
His other record that I did play a lot was the one called “here to there”. Steven was the part of a duo (Frummox), but his singing dominated the songs. Especially “Texas Trilogy” brought a tale from Texas to me in Europe, from a world that was so different from my own. Only a few years later I could visualize the landscape that he described when I crossed Texas in a Greyhound bus. Only then I realized how well his picture resembled the real thing.

Jody, yes the story is that Mickey Raphael used to ride to Willie's gigs with Willie in his car,Everyone one was trying to get songs to Willie to have him record them and he was pretty much unapproachable...Mickey had put Steve's cassette of that song in the car's player without Willie knowing and then he turned the car on and like the song. Winking

Jody,Poodie Locke who was Willie's road manager was one of my room mates back then so I got enough stories to write a book.We rented and destroyed a really nice 3 bedroom house/party crib from Eric Johnson's dad,and steel guitarists Josh Dubin and Danny Hawk rented the house next door,we had most of the steel players in Austin hanging out at one time or another,Herb Steiner,Jimmy Day,Lucky Oceans...I don't think that I ever slept back then. Winking
