Looks like they modify this small bodied standard guitar designed for G# tuning.

They're invented by a Norwegian luthier and produced in (probably) China. They're meant to be used as regular guitars, and the lap steel convertion kit is included when you buy one.
He's got a lot of 'big name' endorsers, but the one I tried didn't impress me at all. One of my students has one, and I tried it both as regular guitar and lap steel,- quite frankly I don't see the point of them guitar wise, it's just like putting a capo at the 4th fret, and the tone is quite dull to my ears both as guitar and lap steel.

But if Knopfler is happy with his, who am I to argue? Wink

I have one without the Lap Steel kit. I've used it as a travel guitar and it sounds quite good and is very well built. I've had it for sale for a while and nobody quite knows what to make of it. Fits in a backpack very nicely.
