I'll echo what Craig stated about Sacred Steel. I believe this rounds out and makes for a wonderful variety of music. We don't hear enough of Sacred Steel.

My hats off to you guys.....and I have plenty of hats! Image

Sure have, 6 months worth, complete refurbishing of every room and the addition of a full service restaurant which replaced the Au Bon Pain in the you know what. They also installed a "Quick Stop" counter for coffee and light refreshments (probably as a result of watching Hyacynth Bucket (pronounced Bou-K) on Keeping Up Appearances)

Jeff DeMaio reports that in addition to the sleeping rooms the Ballroom has also had a complete re-do. They've honored the same contract terms as last year which helps us keep expenses down, but they warned us that next year the rates will escalate and we may not be able to afford it anymore. It would be nice to break even, just once this year, for a change.

As of this date we Have Fessenden, GFI, and perhaps Lamar Steel Guitars displaying as well as QwikStix from New Hampshire, who will have their steel guitar products on display. (See my QwikStix review in the August/Sept. Pedal Steel Newsletter)

Another important note: In addition to our excellent back-up musicians we will have 3 full bands backing their steel players, Lonnie Bennett's Gospel band on Sunday morning at 11 am, Jeff DeMaio with Scott Tyler and Gunsmoke on Saturday night and Terry Sutton with the Stone Canyon Band (day & time not yet determined). Darlene DeMaille will lend her vocals talents as well.

It's lookin' good! C U there!

Craig Stock, glad you can attend the PSGA Show this year. We appreciate all the years you helped with the show. Please get in touch with Jeff DeMaio and advise him as soon as possible. He's the man.

With great steel players like Herby Wallace,
Joe Wright, Mike Sigler, Bobbe Seymour, Jeff D and Gunsmoke mc, by Mike Gross, Jim Cohen this will be a great if the one of the greatest shows of all time...what a lineup wow being a player myself I am a fan of these great players as well and that group with Van Manakas and Bruce Chappel this will be a knock out show. This back up band is the best
as a group and as individuals they are the BEST BE THERE

For you players coming from out of town to do the show:
Think about coming into the city and checking out the music scene here as long as you are in the area. NYC is a truly great music, food and everything city.
If you feel like playing the late night jazz scene is a ball !
I just got in from a jazz club in Brooklyn where they had me sit in with a singer from Mali and some dub reggae jazzbo guys. Some of you guys in Nashville have this weird idea that the jazz guys in NYC are in some lofty world of there own. I'm telling you they are just a batch of kucklehead musicians trying to scrape by and have fun playing music just like everywhere else.

Jody,

Thanks for all of your kind words regarding myself and all of the wonderful players (including yourself) and those great musicians. Saturday night should also be very special with Jeff DeMaio and Gunsmoke. WOW! I am really loooking forward to the event. I plan to do a "Swingin' West" show in early October as a tribute to the PSGA show with material by the musicians that will be there.

It sounds like Sat. night has a different format this year. Although I really enjoy the "super Jam", I've said that I could just kick back and listen to Gunsmoke the whole two and a half hours. I wonder how long they'll be on Sat. night. Ballards, shuffles, swing and even some Bakersfield sound thrown in. An extra treat is Scott and Jeff's precision twining, and it doesn't get any better. I call them the Bobby Flores group of the east. Yes sir, those De Maios are really something.

From everything I've read, there is EVERYTHING you could ever want in a steel guitar show.

There are some factors that make the PSGA show special......:

The huge video screen.... you can watch the player's left & right hand at work, and sometimes the feet. This is great in that there's a learning process by observing this.....although one time during a fiddle break I saw the steel player scratching.....oh, never mind... Image

The PSGA show is an intimate show, both in physical size and in attitude. Very laid back and friendly. You can hang with your heros. And they won't talk about you until after the show... Image

The most important factor.....THERE'S A COSTCO RIGHT NEXT DOOR!!!!!! You can stock up on tuna fish and toilet paper until next year! Need 82 pounds of mixed nuts? You can score that and still not mis "A Way To Survive"....... Image

Merle,

You are right on point about Gunsmoke! Because they are hidden up here in the Northeast most people (with the exception of my "Swingin' West" listeners) in other parts of the country are not aware how good they are. Their love for the music and the lack of an ego come out in as you say a "relaxed" and class performance.

They alone are worth the price and the trip for Saturday night!!!!

Howard....Mixed Nuts???? I've been dealing with them for 32 years and I love every one of them. Steel guitarists are the greatest and I'm as nutty as the rest of 'em when it comes to the steel guitar.

Yep, Gunsmoke really smokes on the bandstand especially with the twin guitars of Jeff and Scott. Lookin' forward to that as well.

Merle, I have no idea what the schedule is at this point. Jeff DeMaio is workin' on it as I type this. Rest assured it will be a good one.

Bob Hoffnar suggests checking out the local music scene in NY., and he is spot on.

If anyone gets into town early, it just so happens the The Django Reinhardt Festival at Birdland begins Nov. 8 (Tues night) and runs through the weekend. The top gypsy jazz musicians from Europe are flown in and American guest jazz artists share the stage with them. This is amazing music from the other end of the spectrum and a nice prelude to the PSGA show.

A lot of great music in NY/CT for this week & weekend in Nov.

If anyone is interested, please contact me. I'll be driving up to CT. on Friday night after the Fest.

The PSGA show is where it's at.
Nice folks, excellent pickers and you can get up close to the players. Not so at the St. Louis Convention.
I'm looking forward to it this year and hope to meet many of my old friends.

Let's put it this way Jody.
We've both added some years since I saw you play the PSGA show in 1988.
See you soon, buddy.
