Hello, fellow steelers. My name is Matt Rhodes and I'm a new member and rock PSG player from Houston. I've been reading the Forum for a while now and have recently decided to take the plunge and join.
There is an independent film being produced in Houston by Jeff Faulkinbury titled "Read On". On Sunday, 12/11/05 at 6PM, part of this filming will take place at a club in downtown Houston called Clark's, which is a small dance club that features music of many genres. The soundtrack to the film will be provided by the band for which I play, the Christopher Wilson Group. After the filming has wrapped up, we will perform (live) all of the soundtrack titles for about an hour. This music has been compared to pop/rock groups like XTC and The Smiths and features the steel in a far less-traditional format. Chris's vocals sound a bit like Justin Hayward (Moody Blues) and Jon Anderson (Yes). The film will include footage (lip-synched Milli Vanilli style) of the band which is, hopefully, one step closer to exposing the steel guitar to the general public.
If any of you happen to live in Texas, especially in and around the Houston area, you're welcome to come as an "extra" in the film. The location for Clark's is 314 Main St. (713-237-8220). I'd suggest bringing ear plugs for the "live" portion of the event, but I'll have enough on hand for those of you who don't. If you intend to be a part of the audience during the filming portion, then the film crew will likely make you sign a waiver stating that you won't sue them if your face appears in the film!
In any case, please email me for more information. I look forward to participating on the Forum and meeting some of you.
Thanks,
Mateo "Bleach" Rhodes |

Welcome to the forum, Matt
This sounds like an interesting show. It's nice to see the steel guitar used in genres where its never been before (at least, I can't think of an example of steel in 80's-style rock along the lines of XTC or Smiths).
I would come out to the taping if I still lived in Houston... but it's a long drive at this point. Maybe the film will end up on an indie-film web site at some point?

Thanks, Tucker. You're right, Oregon is a bit of a hike but if you leave now with a good pair of shoes, you might make it in time .
I'm not sure if the film will actually make it to a web site where one could actually download it, at least anytime soon. The intention is to market both the film and the music to the Hollywood "big guns" as a finished product - sort of like a Project Greenlight scenario without having to remake it. Frankly, I don't know all of the mechanics of that industry so I'm sure there are a number of possible outcomes.
But here's are a link if you want to read a little more about the film side of the project:

Take care,
