Merle's "I Can't Be Myself When I'm With You"--especially the version by Steve Young on "Renegade Picker" with a stunning, heart-wrenching solo by The Master-- Buddy Emmons.

Buddy just wraps his fills around Steve's voice--as only The Big E can do.

I'd highly recommend buying the CD--it's Buddy at his finest.

I have one I sing & many times when I have finished the song folks come up to me & say >
I never heard that song BUT it has to be a Merle Haggard song.
It was never a big hit for him but I feel it should have been - just as good as any of his other drinkin' songs.
It is called "Someone Told My Story in a Song" ...
The words are just super IMHO!!

But here's a couple of additional songs not previously mentioned:
"The Way I Am," (what a great intro by Norm) and
"Let's Chase Each Other 'Round the Room Tonight" - what a great steel solo by Norm.

Plus a story:
I think in the early 80's, Buddy Emmons put on a show at one of the St L Hotels. Purpose might have been to debut the LeGrande model. Emmons played a non-formica wooden D10. During one of BE's songs, the heads of everybody in the audience whipped around to back of the room. In had walked Merle with various members of his band - incl Norm Hamlett.
Merle & the Strangers had a concert that night at St L Fox Theatre.

Of course Merle was asked to sing one song.
Someone suggested "Sing a Sad Song" and Buddy asked Merle: 'What key?'
Merle replied "C"
and Emmons (as only he could).....
quickly replied "Great, I'm hot in 'C.' "

The two of them knocked everybody out. BE's solo was to die for.

In addition to the Emmons show - obtaining all-access passes to that night's Haggard concert - is a day I'll forever remember.

I can only think of one I don't like and that's "The Old Man From The Mountains Comin' Home".

There are so many. One night about 20 years ago at a four hour American Legion gig, the singer Brian Smith, (local bass player Wayne Smith's brother) sang an entire night of Merle songs and didn't repeat any. What a catalog of hits!

My Merle's song is " Goodbyes Come Hard For Me " with Jerry Hayes on Steel Guitar in that Picture & Who's that drummer behind Merle at Bonnie Price's FootHill Club where that picture was taken. Leo J.Eiffert,Jr.

Norman Hamlet deserves a lot of credit for this BEautiful song
Going where the lonelt go is and will always be one of the best Pedal Steel Songs ever played, Far as I'm concerned is is a Prettier ride than Together again. it is Chromatic Filled, SMOOOOOOTH as Glass, Beautiful licks played to perfection He SURE made it a NICE Song 3 Cheers for Mr Hamlet....
