Hi Mike,
Here's a quick review on the PSGA this past weekend. To start I will say the attendance was the higher then years past.
The Double Tree hotel was referbish/remodeled and was nice to stay at....just don't buy any coffee.
The Players: Again Jeff DeMaio's line up of players were all enjoyable players, some things I enjoyed was the R&R segment with Randy Beavers and Russ Hicks was cool hearing their twin steel. (Bought their record, sounds great!) Bobbe seymours thumb picking on MSA's new super slide lap steel was also awhsome to hear. Gunsmoke the group with Jeff Demaio playing steel and Scott playing twin lead and the groups harmony brought you back in time when a group of musican's cared about what they produce as to their sound.
I know I'm missing out on a lot of players who where great and as always the surroundings of other players in the same room was inspiring.
Thanks to Bob Maickel, John and Darlene DeMaille and Jeff De Maio.
I would like to say Thanks to all of them.

I posted last night on page six of the other thread about the show, but i will add some more thoughts here.
*The Q&A session was really great, a neat idea that has now been done for a few years. Some good stories and some tech questions. Bobbe S. had some great stories.
*Joe Wright had some great Charlie Pride's wife stories during his set also.
*Wayne Hetzler from PA was real impressive, he played extremely well and had a great sounding guitar.
*Jim Cohen had a great tribute to Winnie Winston that left few a dry eye in the audience. Our hearts go out to Jim for the recent loss of his sister also.
*and of course the house band, Fooch(how's your neck feeling?), Steve, Dave, Van, Bruce and Larry -always excellent, they can play it all, and more very, very well, and very tasty too.

Howard if you need any pictures , let me know, I got quite a few good ones. I know yours are probably better expecially with that fancy flash. I will send you my shot of the Jerry Garcia Art Exhibit sign though.

unfortunately i was forced to leave by 1pm on sunday because it was my oldest son's birthday.
i must say that the sunday morning concert with lonnie bennet was one of the finest things i have ever heard ever. his performance reminded all that so much can be done with so little eg a 6 string morrel lap steel. it was the first time, for me, that the sound level was not too high to clobber the subtlies of the instrument we love. his duo with randy beavers was chill factor absolute. bob maickel is to be commended for making sure the steel survives and unites cultures. |

Many thanks to Bob, Jeff, and all the PSGA guys for making the weekend 'as good as it gets'for us country boys in the big city...that was one of the most enjoyable steel shows I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of; really good people to work with and a back-up band to die for; Steve and all the guys were awesome....it's great when all you have to be concerned with on the bandstand is what you're trying to do yourself, and not having to worry about what the bands playing (or not playing). All I can say about that band is 'THEM DAWGS CAN HUNT'. Thanks again for a great weekend.

I'd like to echo what ebb said--Lonnie Bennet was a real unexpected highlight for me.A terrific player and wonderful addition to the show.I thoroughly enjoyed his playing and was especially interested in his discussion and anecdotes.
He thoughtfully included stories about the church setting he plays in which is a different place than many of us are coming from.It was great to have an opportunity to be in contact with this different perspective. |

also i had never heard mike sigler before and can only say WOW!. kicked A in the jam also!
i will once again reiterate what it means to me for bob maickel to hang in there year after year for our intstrument. $25 a year dues are a joke. i gladly paid $30 to hear 2 acts on sunday when i knew i had to bail. it costs more to see a bad movie for my family. thank you bob! |
