Magnatone Lapsteel & Amp Set

Post by Chris Battis »

These two, in matching blue MOTS are offered as a set for $650 + shipping. Both are c. 1950 vintage, in 8.5 condition and operating perfectly, with only minor cosmetic issues.

The guitar is a Varsity model, sn# 25953. Its original worn-out tuners have been replaced with a new set of Kluson Deluxes and all the electronic components appear to be original.

The amp is a Melodier model 195-5-J. Its speaker has been replaced recently with a 10" Celestion Vintage, but no other changes or upgrades.

They're a sweet-sounding duo, but I need to thin the herd.

More pics available on request.

I have an Ameriloha guitar that looks exactly like the Magnatone in this add. The only difference is the logo applique. It is an American flag over Ameriloha. I had to replace my tuners as well. The only other thing I have done is clean the pots with Deoxit. It plays and sounds great IMHO. I assume Magnatone built other brands as well?

I have a no name that, except for the color of the fingerboard, looks exactly like this guitar.

My understanding is that Dickerson manufactured these guitars under license for several labels, including Magnatone, Oahu, Varsity, Bronson. I've seen them selling on eBay under all of the above names.

A sweet, absolutely incredible, very Hawaiian sound.

Whoever buys this pair will have one great sounding rig.

Thanks Ned, that Magnatone guitar does have what I'd think of as a very sweet, typically Hawaiian sound. It doesn't sound much like either of my others, a Fender Deluxe and a Supro, though it's tonally closer to the Fender.
