i spoke with john at his house one day about that tune, he told me that they did one track of his steel and then went back and he played the same thing with hims self again on another track , that is how they had gotten that big wide sound, and i did ask the question about the guitar he just said
" An old Push pull" so i assume it was his old Emmons..
Hope this all helps a little..

Hey Terry thanks for uploading that. That cut John did is my favorite of all time. To Prove it is; it is the sole reason and inspiration to my intro and solo and outro on the song title to Miss Leslie's "Between the Whiskey and the Wine", we cut sometime back.
I asked Papa John his permission to double track my steel intro; like he did on that Twitty cut. He said I have his blessings(eventhough he said "you don't need my permission..ha...). But he was thrilled I was inspired by him and wanted to hear it.
Anyway; I cut that song and unfortunately he passed away before I could get it to him.
This will never have the soul that only one person in the world could ever do; and that is John Hughey, but it is my tribute to him.

Thanks for showing us, Ricky. From what I hear on the record, one could get a rig like that and be assured a wonderful sound.

Terry,
The first time I heard that intro, it took me by surprise. Caught me totally off guard for anything like that. I was on my way to a gig, and pulled over on the shoulder of the road, to wait for the break, in hopes I'd hear it again. And, I sure did.
The first thing that came to my mind was: "Darn!! What an intro!" And the next: "Is it ever going to stop climbing..." And yep, the next (probably like so many others) was to work on that intro, just to try & keep up with things at the time..
I Bought the LP, and wore that record (just about) out, listening to that particular tune. That sure did open up some ears!
Memories sure are good to have...

Ricky,
A real nice job on that cut... "Between the Whiskey and the Wine."

Yes, Richard. If you'd read between the lines you would have seen that I was commenting on his rig. I thought it went without saying that Ricky is a top notch player.richard burton wrote:Err....
No Bent, it doesn't work like that![]()
A good player equates to a good sound, good gear is wasted if the player is mediocre.
Needless to say, Ricky is definately a good player

Thanks Ivan for the kind words.
Yes that is a really nice sounding bolt-on you got to Dave....he loves it.
I love Dave like a Brother. I'll never forget meeting him first time; when I came into the Dale Watson band years ago; right after he left. I had to learn all the twin stuff he did with Dale on guitar; but learn it on steel...ha...he about killed me with his brilliant ideas....ha...and I told him that when I met him. We've been buds ever since...and now trade Dale Watson stories still today...ha...
Dave is loving playing steel guitar and will only take guitar gigs if he just has too...>but I will always include him on guitar on my projects if I have anything to say about it...ha....If he'll still have us...ha.
