The last time Smiley played at a show I was at he was one of the highlights, but that was a few years ago. Would love to see and hear him again.

Smiley is a great guy - the first Scott's convention I went to he took the time to talk to me for quite some time. As most know his stories get better and better - he admitted that some of the stories were better now than the last 10 times he told that same story.

I was lucky enough to catch Smiley's set at St. Louis a few years back. I'd never heard him play and didn't know what to expect. I knew he'd been a "jouneyman" player in Nashville for many years so he had to be good. When he was setting up I was surprised to see him with just a little old S-10 ShoBud with three floor pedals and maybe four knee levers. Anyway, he went on to do one helluva job and didn't take a back seat to anyone. My favorite song of his set was a beautiful rendition of "Tammy" which he played flawlessly. He even interjected a little humor in his show when he took off his glasses at one point and stared at the audience. Then he said "I just wanted to show everyone that the nose didn't come off with the glasses!"..... If I go to the convention and Smiley's on the artist's roster I'll make sure to catch his show as he's a good 'un........JH in Va.

In my opinion, Smiley Roberts is the most overlooked player in the business, the ratio of ability to fame is really lop sided.
Smiley is a WONDERFUL player but his gargantouis(SP)
personality overshadows his playing and it shouldn't because he is as fine a player as we have here in Nashville TN. We are very lucky to have this person in this town, and we are all lucky to have this nut in our world of steel guitar.
God bless Smiley for what he does for everyone, everywhere.

I'll have to say a big "AMEN" to that. This was a very nice thread Joe had going about a very worthy individual (Smiley) until "someone" had to interject something negative about another member. This thread will probably be closed now and we all know who's to blame.........JH in Va.

Now back to the positive, Smiley lives very close to my store in Hendersonville and always shows up to sing happy birthday to anyone where it's applicable, A wonderful, considerate.

Hey Bobbe,

Just to hitchhike on your comments about our buddy. I've known Smiles for over thirty years, met him first on one of the first country music cruises when he was with Overstreet. When you think of Smiley, you obviously think of his outrageous humor and personality, and maybe overlook what a fine player he is. I, along with everyone else present, was reminded of his skills when he came down to do the Atlanta show a few years ago. I have to say, it was one of the highlights of the show and one of the most fun sets to play. I wish we could do it more often. Hopefully, I'll see him at the NTSGA show tomorrow.

I just started reading some of the above..Jerry I was under the understanding that John at one time was a good friend of yours and certainly a brother of the craft?..In any case I am happy that so many expressed their feelings about Smiley ,I spoke with Smiles about it and he believe it or not, was humbled by all the attention..I enjoyed going to the ISGC in the past always with Smiley..(I would do the driving

) It was great watching him play the 2002 show even tho getting up after almost staying up all night was a chore..Smiley adds a lot of life and light to any room and it'd not only from the shorts

I hope to go again but it would only be if Smiley goes..So thank you all for replying..I ask now that b0b close this thread...Knowing me I will probably start a new one around next July..

Joe That is true, If Mr Hase/Hayes thinks that I have let my Masonic Membership Expire he is misinformed, I have a valid Current Dues Card in my wallet.

I thought about retaliating, I was going to post some of his playing and let the entire SGF Membership know how he plays while talking up a great game to imply he is the hottest picker since the Steel Guitar was invented. But I have Decided against doing that.

I have known Bobbe For many years and I posted nothing about him that I would not say to his face or haven't posted on this forum before. My post was intended to be humerous and in fact Bobbe has said most of those things at one time or another.

Mr Hase/Hayes didn't have a dog in this one and he shouldn't try to hunt unless this was a feeble attempt to try and make himself look Big.

I figured there was some ball busting going on as I know both Bobbe and John are good friends of smiley..I should add that John has built and given Smiley his own web page and site also a few others..He has offered me the same however seeing I am retired from working I'd rather see him give it to someone more deserving..However he does have some of my T.O. produced music on both sites featuring Smiley on Steel...It can be entered by either the Nashpropickers website or the DEKLEY site to which Smiley still owns a low numbered one..At this point I'm not sure the sight can be accessed unless one is a member of either..

Okay boys, Ya'll be nice, we're all on the same page here and that is that Smiley is way up there on all our lists of players we love (in one way or another). Anyway, this weekend at our NTSGA Jam Smiley received Lynns' Goldbrick Award, a very coveted recognition of the recipient's contribution to our beloved instrument; well desereved by Smiley in anyones' opinion, I hope, and one that I'm looking forward to receiving before I croak, that is if the Troubador sees fit.

I also noticed that Smiley was not on the schedule to play and I'm not sure if it was because he wasn't asked....that's not my business....but I do wish he could be included in St' Louis and Dallas and any of the others he'd like to do, because there's no doubt he would add a lot to any of those weekends....maybe more than any of us would be ready for.

I too saw Smiley at the NTSGA show, and he allowed as how he hasn't used his computer in a couple of years, and therefore is quite out of the loop.

Just parenthetical to another topic in this thread, as well as elsewhere on the Forum, I've seen statements by those whom I know to be brothers in the Craft, and one man in particular when denigrating the SGHOF Committee (in which are three 32 degree Masons), who has in doing so violated the solemn Obligation he took upon himself when he was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. That fact is quite disturbing and disheartening to me.

I worked with Andy for a short while at a club called the Gallant Russell something or other and we did some traveling Gigs up to Vermont and New Hampshire..A fun time..Tell him I still have some reel to reel tapes of us to blackmail him with..

Joe, if you decide to wander out some Monday night, we are working every Monday (except Nov 1st) at the Oxford Community center. It's located at US301 and about 1 block south of CR466 and about 1/2 block east of US301 (the road to The Villages). That's about as close as I can get you.

Oxford is just north of Wildwood (3 miles north of Bondz Music in Wildwood).

We have a show/jam similar to Catfish Johnny's. We do about an hour and then take a break and then come back with singers who have signed up.
