R B 'Girl In The Glass'

Post by richard burton »

This is my attempt at this tune.

I've done it my own way, largely because I don't really know the tune, so there's a fair bit of ad lib in it

Don't be alarmed at all the motorbikes and guitars in the video, they're just images which have to go with the audio, in order for youtube to accept it.

I thought I might as well revisit my youth, and show pictures of stuff that is in my history

It makes sense to first have a firm grasp of the melody line of a song. Mike Zigler's version is spot on, as well as the vocal version by Bobby Flores. Email me and I'll send you the Bobby Flores version.

Very nicely done Richard. You and Mike have different styles,
but I could listen to you both of you playing for many hours.
I sure love that that song, and I'm trying to learn to play it too,
but I know I'll never be able to play as good as either of you do. :( :( :( Carl

Thanks Carl :D

Nic,
I suppose it might have been a bit better if I had got a slightly better handle on the tune, but I couldn't see the point in trying to make a carbon-copy of Mike's version (I don't have the ability, anyway)

Agreed.....But then, what's the point in 3 minutes of tuneless noodling over chord changes, as posted on Youtube? The melody line has not been established. Thus, the following improvisation lines comes across as just noodling.
Sorry to have to rain on your parade,Richard, but I'm sure you can do better. :)

Nic : How about you doing this fine number for us some time; I believe richard did a great job on the song; doodling or noodling; I think he did just fine..A Big " E " for effort. Thanks,,Bernie

I really must stop posting when I've had too much to drink.

Last night my post seemed to me to be the height of witticism, now in the cold, sober light of the morning I can only offer a grovelling apology to Nic

Thanks Bernie for your comments :D

Bernie,
As a matter of fact, I did do a version some time ago....Like Richard, I also try to play songs 'my way'.....One of the steel guitar forum members asked me to do a version .....
Check it out at http://steelguitarnetwork.com/?xg_sourc ... es_network
It's on their playlist....on the left of the opening page....just scroll down for a bit.
Richard, only afterwards did I realise I should have replied In the words of Manual.... "Si, Mr Fawlty"..... :D :D

Nic,
You're version is just as good as the rest of them,
and it's the also way I'd like to be able to play it.
You fellows are all so good, there's no need to compare.
The only difference I see is in your styles, and you
all play what you feel so well, and that's what I like.

Hi Richard,

I listened to your Clip and you have
incorporated many of the elements
of the E9th sound into the song.
I like your intrepretation and I hope you
do more.

Thanks Guys :D

Yes Micky, those Rapiers could be a bit ropy :D

The Hayman was a well made gutar, and the Hofner Senator was unplayable, but very pretty, and I've alway regretted selling it :(

Hi Richard, did you have that Hayman? I always wanted one but settled for a telecaster amongst others. Yes they were good guitars....very telecasterish in tone. I had a Bass player who had a Hayman...he loved it, but it was a Tad heavy. I bet there's a few of those Hayman's under people's beds now gathering dust. They must be pushing 40 years old now. If I saw one for sale I'd be after it :)

Going for my 11 and half year check up on Sept 13th and 14th ..fingers crossed :)

Micky Byrne about 170 miles south of you
