Gabby Pahinui will again be celebrated with a full day of the best in slack key and steel guitar music. Steelers schedualed to be there include, at least, Alan Akaka, Gregg Sardinha, Eddie Palama, probably Derrick Mau and hopefully Jeff Au Hoy. These fine players will represent the steel playing part of Pops' vast musical heritage.

Unfortunately, no Derrick or Jeff, however, I forgot to mention Ron Kanahele was with the Abrigo Ohana, and Buck Giles (one of Jerry Byrd's last students) was also part of the proceedings.
There were times when having Derrick or Jeff would have taken some groups to yet another level.
Tragically, there are still a lot of Hawaiians who have little clue about the steel guitar...
All in all, it went smooth and plenty of fun was to be had amongst a smaller than should be crowd for such an event with this much talent, free, and especially in memory of Pops, but considering it was (finally) a hot day (with no shade) and there were contending attractions around the island, they were respectful and appreciative.
Too bad Martin Pahinui chose again to abstain from the proceedings. To have all three performing brothers together again on stage is becoming a dream, one most likely not soon to happen. But to have a rare 30 minutes of Bla Pahinui was, and is always, a highlite. http://www.pahinui.com/
It's encouraging to see brother Cyril http://www.cyrilpahinui.com/ the tribute's organizer, continuing to include steel in most of his live performances. He had Greg with him yesterday, and Jeff always is with him on Wednesday nights in Waikiki.
I made sure to get good pix of the important moments, and I'll try getting them posted. |
