I spent some time in a record store (vinyl) this weekend and came across a few gems. First was The Dirty Blues Band featuring Glenn Ross Campell. I think Glenn could have been the premier psycadelic/blues/rock steel player, predating David Lindley, coming in out in '65 or '66 with The Misunderstood playing non pedal.

I also scored Cristo Redentor by Harvey Mandel (the Snake) and was pleased to find Pete Drake on a few cuts, weaving in and out of backwards tracking guitar riffs from Harvey.

Who are the other obcsure innovators of rock steel from the early to mid 1960's? I know Rusty Young was ahead of his time in 1966.

Dave

Red Rhodes. Not too obscure though.

Red Rhodes played steel on Fraternity of Man's "Don't Bogart Me" and was featured in the 60's classic Easy Rider.

Thanks. I'm pretty familiar with the country rock guys. Red played on some early Byrds stuff too. I'm wondering who was steelin' with the rock bands before that post hippy honkytonk scene. Also I should have mentioned in the post that I was thinking more of bands with regular steel players, not just the occasional studio player appearance.

Thanks again
Dave

I think this band was called the Outlaws from the UK, early sixties. Members included Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) and Chas Hodges (H H & F).

I saw Charlie Musselwhite's Blues Band in the mid '60's and he had a pedal player, mostly C6. Do not know the name, anybody?
