This is likely the most GUTSY post I have made yet. A few weeks back I started a song development idea called "Fruit Loop". Here is some progress on that idea.
For starters, I just took a basic drum loop then played a rhythmic feeling pattern on my steel guitar. I'm still perfecting this whole rhythm idea. Eventually I will likely lay down at least two patterns of just rhythm type ideas. One sort of like what is here and the other with a flat pick. That's right a flat pick. I wish I still add my steel guitar with the guitar frets! I could really have fun on that doing this style.
Next, and be sure to get to this part, I just simply turn my little blues box on and experiment with some ideas. I'm close to a melodic statement but still not there yet. Solo wise it's starting to take shape. Oh and by the way, I will have both the bluesy/distorted sound and some natural steel sounds on this tune!!!

Well............. there goes the old idea that steel is not a rhythm instrument. |

Okay so I don't think many of will believe this but I just now You Tubed the Robert Randolph performance on Letterman. I have heard of this guy but never even bothered to listen to him until now. Certainly a great performer and the exposure for our instrument is undeniable. Really great stuff.
I would add that my rhythmic ideas for steel guitar do not come from RR. Literally, I just heard him for the first time. Here's the secret When I was 18 I recorded (you can see these on You Tube) some hip hop type music with my steel. Actually, I had a steel guitar that Gene Fields put a fretboard on the neck. This means you don't play it with a bar...you actually play it like an electric guitar. It was not great for single string things but rhythm stuff was amazing. I mostly used it with a flat pick. So I've been doing this rhythm approach for a long time.
Then I became immersed a few years ago in dobro. This led to Rob Ickes. So of late, I'm working on perfecting this whole concept of chord comping and power chords, etc. _________________ Zane King

Zane, thanks for posting that! I'm basically a country player but being an ex-SoCal dude I've always been into a lot of other kinds of music and your efforts into this type of playing is greatly appreciated by myself and others! It was very enjoyable and I hope to hear a lot more of this style as time goes by. Any chance of some rhythm tracks being available for sale in the future? I know I'd appreciate some!.....JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Jerry - thanks! Yes, I will be putting tracks together on several things. What are you most interested in? Stylistically that is?

Zane, I'm interested in modern pop style things with a good beat such as your "Fruit Loop", not really hard core jazz but with an up to date vibe. I'm kinda tired of the bebop steel as you can get a lot of tracks in that style. Maybe even some things by groups like the Eagles! I'd love to have a track of Hotel California or New Kid in Town or even one of their country things such as Hollywood Waltz. Once again, I love what you're doing!....JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

That's crazy! Just this afternoon in my search for tunes...I played Eagle's "Lyin' Eyes". All of their tunes work great for steel. I also am working on an arrangement of Michael Jackson's "Beat It". That tune had great guitar on it. In addition, I'm learning Christopher Cross' "Sailing". I have started yet but his "Ride Like The Wind" is cool too. Bottom line here is I'm working on completely new endeavor and I'm going to keep it very progressive. My ultimate hope is that I can inspire others to reach further.
Stay tuned I'm about to post a new video of a brand new original.
