Eddie and Myrna Kamae have put out yet another DVD to celebrate Hawaiian heritage. This time it's an overview of the Hawaiian slack key guitar http://www.mountainapplecompany.com/new-releases/ki-ho-alu-slack-key-the-hawaiian-way

Altho born/raised in territorial Hawaii, Eddie set an early course for success that focused on his stylings of American standards for the day, and in fact didn't even care for Hawaiian music, until the mid 50s when he met Gabby Pahinui, the all-time slack key legend with whom he soon formed the legendary Sons Of Hawaii which included the great David 'Feet' Rogers on steel. Gabby get's plenty of mention as well as current top dog Ledward Kaapana and many other superbly gifted players.

I saw a preview clip that happened to show a backyard jam which included an acoustic steel player. I'll be checking this video out for that, and the rest will be the icing.

You might call this a "reissued" slack key history DVD as opposed to a "new" one. I was at the premiere of this film at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. - in May 1993. Very Happy

Eddie and Myrna Kamae are true keepers of the culture. I have been waiting for this film for purchase since that fateful day in 1993 as it has since only been available in VHS format and only for distribution to schools for (as Basil Henriques would say) "educational purposes only."

Anyone remotely interested in Hawaiian culture could benefit greatly from seeing any of the Kamae-produced films. I don't know what retail outlets carry them, but most can be ordered directly from the Hawaiian Legacy Foundation at http://www.hawaiianlegacy.com.

Let's split the fish and call it 'new for sale' Cool
I didn't know they 'toured' the film, lucky you got to see it long ago, Bill. How much steel do we get to see/hear?
It's also easily available via http://www.amazon.com/Hawaiian-Way-Ho%60alu-Slack-Key/dp/B003U8B670
