I've got an RP and a Herby Wallace Mullen steel, the HWP is supposed to be closer to the specs of a pre-RP. There's probably a few more differences than just this one, but, one of the things that I see different between the two that I have is that the HWP has a slight difference in the thickness of the wood in the front and back aprons of the body. The RP has the same thickness, front and back. There's probably a bunch of players that can answer with a good bit more info than I on this subject, but, I thought maybe I'd chirp in here with the little bit that I know. |

I don't claim to know it all but I have been playing and selling Mullen guitars for over 26 years, so I am aware of the differences that have come about through the years. First, one thing is that all preRPs are not the same. There have been several changes over the years in the changer, the wood thickness, the pickups, tuning keys, necks and so on. The version I played and sold for many years called the HWP was a later version of the preRP. Now, there is a lot of differences in the RP, HWP and preRPs. The RP has a completely different changer, different wood thickness in 3 places and different pickups. The main difference in the HWP and RP is in the tone and is because of the differences I mentioned. I hope this helped a little. Of course, I am still selling and playing Mullen which I think is the finest on the market today.

I don't claim to know much about this subject. I have a pre RP that was buit in 96. I believe these to be superior to the RP in many ways. This is just my opinion. One of my good friend bought a RP and sold his 96 pre RP and has been sorry ever since.

One of the main differences I found out the hard way is that the undercariage parts of an pre-RP are different. The bell cranks are smaller and the cross-shafts also.
So when you call for parts, make sure you give the Mullen folks the serial number of the steel so they get the correct parts for you.
I play a 1994 pre-RP model and I think it's one of the best sounding steels I ever played.
