Nice Mickey, thanks! This is my uncle's favorite song to play...off to the woodshed. I'm gonna have a nice surprise for him next time he comes down. :)

So, if memory serves (and it's gettin' less reliable), it was Bernie Leadon who played "simulated" steel guitar on that first Eagles album. And on the track "Best of My Love" from ON THE BORDER, Bernie played pedal steel. So, you're certainly correct that the guy playing that "simulated" steel does indeed play pedal steel..... for real.

You can also play it using the 1st and 4th strings with the C pedal to give you the unison on the 7th fret, and drop your 2nd string a 1/2 step to get the A note on the climb, and and then move it up to the 9th fret. You just have to use a slant on the bar, since the tuning doesn't quite match up. I learned to play it this way when the song came out cause I did'nt have a double stop on my 2nd string.

I think that solo was done with a B Bender telecaster, if you analyze the bends on a 6 string guitar they lay out very logically for a full step B bender pull.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-Bender

I have always played it using the 2nd string lower and 1 and 4 unison at the 7th and 9th frets as Steve Becker mentions.

In any case I find it fun and useful to analyze solos played on other instruments, it usually doesn't lay out that easily on pedal steel and threfore requires figuring out positions that are less common on steel.
