Is there anyone living close enough to the Emmons steel company, to find out if they are simply on Vacation or if they are still in business?

I was told they may be out of, (or going out of) business. But I can hardly believe that.

Thanks, and I'd definitely appreciate it if someone could stop around to find out.

Thanks,,,, Don

I need to get in touch with either Ron, Rebecca or Bobbie.

And no! I'm not a hostile client, nor a client.

Thanks,

Don

Here's the report on them from the BBB. I'm not into bashing them, but you'd think they'd have a more positive report after being in business for 50 years or so.

And, as a web designer, I have to say that their site, which is pitiful, was done with Microsoft Front Page, which was discontinued several years ago because it was a terrible piece of software, so, along with the phone issue, we can infer that they're not at the top of modern business practices and technology.

Maybe this would work:
Barney: "Sarah, get me the Emmons Guitar Company."
Andy: "You gettin' a steel guitar, Barn?"
Barney: "No, this is for Jim Lindsey. Bobby Fleet wants him to get one".

Don, when you do get through. They will return your call. Just a guess. Maybe Bobbie's on vacation. Rebecca's home with the baby. And Ron was trying to get some work done. Which you can't do if you answer a phone.
Gone are the days of turning out 200 units a year. They are a mom and pop shop now. Like Bruce and Paul. They don't work the web. They don't have to. They have a waiting list.

They were in business last week. That I know for sure.Smile

Cal, in looking at that BBB report, I see one complaint filed in the past 36 months. Don't you think you're being a little harsh on them if you're basing it solely on this evidence?

Thats Not entirely true about Microsoft Frontpage, They Didn't Dump it because it was Terrible They Updated and Improved it to use Newer Technology, Its Still around but now called Microsoft Expression Web. Maybe its was a scheme to sell more software. I have and use both Versions.

One of these days I'm going to get to see an Andy Griffith episode with the "Jim Lindsey" that's associated with the show. Laughing I've been told many times that the character is a guitar player who was in several episodes, but I've never yet seen one of them.

Since the various threads about problems with Emmons began, I've avoided jumping into any of the Emmons threads, but this one caught my eye in a different way.

I, too, have been trying to call the Emmons company for the last couple of weeks to see if they still have any of the "chromed" colored fret boards available and, just like Don's results, the phone doesn't ring. I simply get a message stating "This mail box is full and cannot accept new messages at this time."

On behalf of a friend of mine who needs a new name plate for his guitar, I also tried ordering an Emmons name plate through their online order form and, when trying to submit the order, got "the server could not resolve your request" as a response. When that didn't work, I printed the .PDF order form and gave him the catalog number of the name plate so he can send off the order through regular mail if he wants to go in that direction.

I have no idea what the problem may be and I'm not going to let my imagination go wild trying to speculate what the issue is. I'm just hoping that, whatever it is, it may soon be resolved and we'll be able to contact them again. Would sure love to have a set of those "chromed" colored fret boards if they're still available and I know my buddy would love to have a new name plate on his guitar (his old one looks pretty bad). Smile

Here's Jim Lindsey getting in trouble in downtown Mayberry. This is one of the best episodes. Andy, Barney and Jim do 'New River Train'.

I've always had good luck sending them a fax.
I send them an order via fax and a few days later the order arrives in the mail with an invoice. Smooth.

Jim, the report also said: "On at least one occasion, BBB sent mail to this company in an attempt to develop a report. The mail was returned by the Post Office; therefore a complete BBB report at this time is unavailable."
Makes ya wonder, eh? Also, that one complaint wasn't resolved.

John, FrontPage was easy to use, but it created bloated, non-standard HTML code and needed FrontPage extensions installed on the server, so it was an application designed more for the hobbyist than for professional web developers. Microsoft has always tried to create its own version of the internet, but with recent upgrades to Internet Explorer they've become more compliant with the rest of the world, and I'm sure Microsoft Expression Web is an improvement.

Jim, as a dealer for Emmons I have been told that they no longer have the chrome fretboards and most likely will not in the future. I have been using and selling them for about 10 years and have put them on every Emmons guitar I got hold of. I do hate to no longer be able to get the chrome boards.
I am referring to the narrow lined ones. I don't care for the wide lined ones.

Thanks for the "Jim Lindsey" Andy Griffith links guys ... although on the one that Cartwright provided, someone had removed the original music and replaced it with something really bad; however, that link led me to this one with the original sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1BmXMnRCnc

Glad to see they portrayed the character of "Jim Lindsey" as someone who can play. Smile

Tommy, thanks for the info. I thought that actor looked familiar. If I remember right, I think his real name is James Best, or something like that.

Jerry, thanks for the info. I'll really miss those chromed fret boards if they're not doing them anymore. I always installed them on my Mullen guitars.

A Quick Edit: Looks like while I was typing this, several confirmations that it was James Best came in. It was an entertaining episode of Andy Griffith. Smile

Not to sidetrack away from the thread's topic, but to bring a quick answer to the question for anyone who might be curious, I did a Google search for the name of the guitar player who actually played the "Jim Lindsey" guitar parts. Here is what came up as the answer in Wiki-pedia:

"I wrote to James Best and he told me he faked the guitar playing, but did not reveal who the musician was. Jim Lindsey was played by James Best who actually played the guitar, but is best known for his role as Roscoe P. Coltraine in "The Dukes of Hazard". From watching his fingers line up so poorly with the sound track, I doubt Best played on the track. It's remotely possible that Best over-dubbed his own guitar parts on episode #31. They're simpler rock-n-roll. Episode #3, however, is jazzy, advanced and difficult. The actor's hands are sometimes avoided by the camera. Being a major show, this was probably a network staff session player (they don't have those anymore) who was probably a well known jazz artist, too. If my memory serves me, the guitarist was Herb Ellis. His name appears in the credits after the show. To those unfamiliar with the name, he is a world class jazz guitarist and, as with many of them, played on many rock-n-roll era recordings. Earle Hagen was the music director for The Andy Griffith Show and he said that he remembers the person playing the parts for Jim Lindsey as being staff musician Barney Kessel instead of Herb Ellis, though the credits at the end of the show would indicate that Ellis was actually the guitarist in question."

And now we return you to our regularly scheduled thread topic. Smile

The Mayberry mortician needed to loosen up a bit, he should have known that the first 3 letters of funeral spell 'fun', and if you jumble them up you can spell 'real fun'.

James Best has a book out, "Best In Hollywood", his autobiography. Looking forward to reading (only) the Mayberry part.

I wonder if there's some out-takes with Andy and Herb playing together. That would be way cool.

I met Herb once, and he was a real nice guy. He died just a few months ago. A true monster player. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb_Ellis
