Jerry Byrd's course will lead you through a historical progression of tunings up to C6 and show you how to change between the different tunings. Additionally it teaches basic techniques and theory/chord construction. Highly recommended.

Jerry's course and video can be had from Scotty - http://scottysmusic.com/byrdbook.htm

Start w/Jerry, once you have the fundamentals down his way, pick up everything you can from everybody else.

I really liked this one: http://www.amazon.com/presents-Anyone-Play-Steel-Guitar/dp/B0013KXZ4O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276550269&sr=8-1
- for an absolute beginner it is the best one of those I tried.

"Basic C6th Nonpedal Lap Steel Method" by DeWitt Scott, Mel Bay publication available from the Steel Guitar Forum.

This is a book and CD. No DVD. It contains theory along with excellent arrangements written in both standard notation and tab. I bought it to learn slants and am very happy I did. It has forward and reverse slants on two and three strings. When I had a question on how to hold my hand for slants I just watched Jerry Byrd on YouTube Smile

The CD has all the tunes played with the steel on one channel and the backing track on the other so you can play along with Scotty or just play along with the backing track. I consider this book and CD to be a screaming bargain.

This is an excellent book once you know the first most important steps, however, for the beginner there is the ultimate need of knowing how to properly hold the bar, and this book doesn't delve into that at all. Starting off on the wrong foot with this most basic fundamental is not doing the student any benefit.

Tim,
Get down to Billy Cooper's and take a lesson with Buddy Charleton. He is a master at non pedal and a great teacher.

Last time I was down there he showed me a bunch of Jerry Byrd tricks I would never have figured out on my own.
