I know ,i have posted this before, and I have seen that others asked for that too,
When the great album "Altered Ego" was made, HAL used an E6 tuning with an added 9th. Does anybody knows  this copedent? Hal's E9/6 written in Winnie Winston's book doesn't seem correct, or maybe it's incomplete. And it is a 10 or 12 string tuning ? thanks

Bob Hempker who is a Forum Member, and a great steel player, should know.... he was Loretta Lynn's Road Player for many years and can play anything that Hal Rugg ever recorded with Loretta.
If he sees this post maybe he will respond. |

Hal wrote me a letter in 1980 with the jazz copedent he used on that record, but my ex-wife threw it out before I got a chance to see it. 
But that's water under the bridge.
As I recall from talking to him about it at the time, it was an E13 kind of approach with lots of Bill Evans voicings. He told me later that he gave up on it because he started playing steel shows where everybody wanted him to play western swing, and it wasn't a swing oriented tuning.
That record is still one of my favorites. What a great player! |

Bill,
What you have there is when Hal used Curly Chalker's C6th tuning [without all of Curly's pedal changes]. He went to that 13th tuning later on.

| Rick, that album "Altered Ego" is the only one I know of. Hal did a killer version of 'All the Things You Are" with kind of a Chick Corea groove. Great album (I wish I still had it). |

Would that be the tuning in Winnie's book ? The man was a musical genuis ! Loved his playing and the Altered Ego album.

I bought Hals Franklin that was used on all the Stadler brothers shows and who knows what else. The only thing that I seen different was the Bo Wa was on the 5th pedal instead of the 9th.
I feel sure that a great player like Hal might not of had every guitar set up the same way. I can only speak for the Franklin. I had it changed back to the 9th.
