Realizing that I could not be up to par from my feet surgery to play a gig, I hired Mike to sit in for me last Saturday night. Kinda' disobeying the doctor's orders, (which was to try walking on my feet for just a little bit)and being bored to tears from sitting and laying around the house, I drove out to the gig. I even took my gear,,,just in case. haha! Mike and the guys in the band went ahead and set up my stuff for me.
Assuring Mike that he was the 1'st chair steel player, I gave it a try. I was able to do a few simple things for a little while, but soon realized I had made a mistake when it came to playing. I tried not to show it, but it got pretty intense for me.
However, with Mike in the "batter's box", and even though I've known and heard Mike for years, I never realized just how good he was.
I'm here to tell you guys,,,,Mike Brinkmeyer is one FANTISTIC player! His tone, touch and execution on that old '67 Emmons "bolt on" was impeccable.
Thanks Mike for being the friend that you are and have been for many years.
BTW Mike, I'm sorry for the "van door problem", but thanks agagin for the help with that.
I believe Mike has been the steel player for the Tell Stars Band for about 30 years or so.

You got that right Bobby, Mike has played great for years. I remember seeing him play years ago at with the Telstars and he played great back then. I've tried to get him to sub for me a couple of times and he's always been busy. I guess that might be a good thing I might lose my gig once they hear how good he plays. _________________ A couple of guitars

Yes I agree as well. When I first started getting interested in the starting playing the steel, I would visit with Mike, and get as much information out of him as I could. He is a super picker..and yes Bobby his tone is fantastic! the Telstars ius one of my wife and I's, favorite bands to go dance to. Bump for my friend Mike and for a good friend and steel player!

Bobby, Bubba and Brandon – I appreciate the kind comments coming from such players as yourselves.
Bobby, you just had me in my element that night – playing some good country tunes with some fine, fun loving musicians. If you were struggling that night, you sure had me fooled. And as far as helping you with the van door – it was the least I could do after you tweaked my knee lever by flashlight in a dark, empty parking lot .
Thanks again guys. |
