I just purchased this Marlen and to my disbelief it is Emmons set up, but Pedal C raises strings 1 & 7, rather than 4 & 5 on an S-10 3 x 3. Pedals A & B are correct. I had asked and I was told it was Emmons set up, so I just assumed Pedal C raised 4 & 5.
Also it is a 3 knee lever with the left inner and outer raising and lowering the E's. THey work fine. The problem is the 3rd knee lever, which is a right inner.
It raises strings 2 & 9, rather than lowering them.
I have no idea how to tune a pull release.
This guitar is actually going to a good home, but before it can go I need to correct this problem. I can work on all pulls, but I have no idea how to work on a pull release. It is an early Marlen from the early 70's. It has 5 holes in the finger.
What I'd like to do is for Pedal C to move the bell cranks and rods from 1 & 7 to 4 & 5.
Then I'd like to lower strings 2 & 9 rather than raising them. But if it is a big hassle to do that, being it is only a 3 knee lever, I could move them rods to raise 1 & 7 instead for an easier option.
So I'd have a guitar w/ Emmons set up on Pedals
and the 3 knee levers would raise and lower the E's and raises 1 & 7. That would work. If that is easier on the knee lever than lowering to 2 & 9, then that is the way to go.
This guitar is going to Vermont. What I'd like to do if possible is to put rods where they belong for all raises if it doesn't entail too much. If it's a lot of adjustment, then I'd like to ship it to someone that knows how to change this around the way I want it and then have them forward to my buyer. This way I could avoid 3 freight charges. I'd like to stay away shipping to California or out west anywhere as I live in Minnesota and if I need to ship for repair first, get someone in line for freight. That would keep my cost down.
Does anyone have any thoughts to what to do and who to send if that is the way to go? I want to make sure the guy gets a good guitar that plays nice and is adjusted nicely.

| If you take a look at how the 4th and 8th strings are lowered, that will give you some indication of how to set up the 2nd and 9th string lowers. |

| If it's anything like my 1966 Marlen, there is only one raise rod and one lower rod per finger, so if a string is raised twice (the 5th string raised from B to C# by the A pedal and the C pedal, for example) then the raise rod has to go through two bellcranks, one on the A pedal cross-shaft and one on the C pedal cross-shaft. |

TXS for all your help guys. I can work on an all pull with no problems. I thought that these pull releases were simple to work on. Now I am an unbeliever.
I guess they are not that easy to set up, but once you get them set up they stay in tune well.
Well, I am going to send this guitar off to Dave Collins to get it working right and then onto it's new owner.
TXS for all the help. I think I'll stay away from these from now on.
