Dell 8300, XP
USPS shipped it across country. Arrived OK.
It boots to Windows and seems fine until I plug in the USB mouse. Then, immediately, the blue screen of death. I'm ready to take it to a computer repair shop unless there is something simple I have missed. _________________ heavily medicated for your safety |

Does the USB mouse work on another computer?
Do you have another USB device that you can plug in to see if it's just a bad USB card?
Did you try a different USB port? There are usually some in front too..
You can try to update the USB drivers..
Good luck... |

I have switched mouses (meece), and it still doesn't work. I know the mouses are good as they work in my laptop. I have put in a unconnected usb and no problem. It seems no matter which port I use, the results are the same. I will tear it down a little further to see what I can see.
Wiz. The computer is at least 5 years old.
Thanks for the replys. _________________ heavily medicated for your safety |

Ken, did you try booting from a Linux live disk, like Knoppix or Ubuntu? It might help you decide if it's a hardware or OS problem. _________________ "For every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert." -- Arthur C. Clarke |

Not sure what "unconnected usb" means - if it means a USB cable with nothing on the other end, that wouldn't do anything.
What does device manager look like? Any entries that show abnormal - specifically the entry for "Mice and other pointing devices" or whatever it said way back in WinXP?
If the hardware is confirmed good, next likely would probably be a driver issue. You could try uninstalling some potentially-implicated devices (USB and Mice line items) and let XP reinstall them on reboot. You may need the XP install disk for that.
And, were I in your place, I'd be running JV16 Power Tools Registry Cleaner on that bad boy like the proverbial chicken on a June bug - but that's just me. |

Thanks for chiming in folks. I have decided to turn it over to a computer fixit place. I'd rather them spend the time than me (or us) guessing. While they are fixing it I can be next door at the driving range trying out my new clubs.
And, I have been using Uni-blue registry cleaner for a long time.
If anyone is interested, for future reference, I can post the fix. _________________ heavily medicated for your safety |

Just to clarify for Wiz, an 8300 is an old PC - probably built in the 2003 timeframe. |

I was thrown by the statement that it was shipped across the country by USPS. I thought it was a new Dell.
I had a similar problem with my front panel USB jacks up to mid-2007. Sometimes, as I plugged in a USB device, the computer would instantly restart. I opened up the case and reversed one of the plugs that plugged into the pair of USB output sockets on the motherboard. Problem solved! _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Turns out it was a partition problem in the new hard drive. They fixed it and of course I lost everything. Backed it up before so no problem. It had XP and when I got it back it now has Vista. My laptop has XP. My wife's new computer has Windows 7. I only know XP. Looks like I have some learning to do.
I assume I can still link these together in a home network? Gotta learn how to do that as well. Fortunately all are wireless.
Now the fun begins, seeing if I can load up the old programs from XP. _________________ heavily medicated for your safety |

I have an MSI K7T Pro motherboard based box that, once in a while, goes BSOD when I have a disk type USB storage unit attached.
I'll check for reversed wires at the mobo. _________________ Lawyers are done: Emmons SD-10, 3 Dekleys including a D10, NV400, and lots of effects units to cover my clams... |
