About 2 months ago I rediscovered my old Izzy Plus that I bought and used in the early 80's. At the recent Portland Or Steel Jam, I put it out on the "for sale" table. I guy was interested in it but had never heard one, so I demo-ed it through my rig. Our jaws dropped it really improved the tone. I know that a Rev pre-amp has it's own Black Box circuitry, and so any other impedance matching devices are considered redundant, but "hearing was believing".
Forward to last night
I decided to do a mini shoot-out. Izzy Plus vs. Freeloader vs. straight in. Using a push-pull through a Hilton VP and a Revelation/Lexicon MX300/Stewart 1.2 system, I tested all 3 options for a set apiece, then alternated them during the last set. Basically I left all the amp settings alone until the last set and I tried to EQ the amp for each device.
Results:
The Izzy beat out both the Freeloader and straight in hands down. The Izzy added clarity, articulation and punch. I'm glad I rediscovered it. |

Well, going through a Hilton VP you are already not going "straight in" as most 6-stringer purists would call it, because the Hilton is an active pedal.
If you are saying that in all cases compared you used the Hilton VP, and in all cases the chain from the VP on out remained unchanged, just inserting the Freeloader or Lil' Izzy between the guitar and VP, then your findings have some real usefulness in comparing various "buffer-preamp" devices. |

John, I was using the 3-cord Revelation set up:
[1] cord from guitar--> preamp (straight in)
[2] cord from preamp send --> VP in
[3] cord from pre-amp return --> VP out
All 3 shoot-out setups (in all cases) involved cord # 1 only. |

They are very good little units .AND they work well on other instruments as well . If you have a guitar or bass that has weak pickups it will give them a boost . The output is adjustable too . If the signal is 'fuzzy' or has a distorted sound just back it down a little with the little screw inside . |
