Here's Hugh Harris and me doing "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine" on a sunny day. The wind messed with the audio a bit, but it's not too bad.

Hugh is singing through the Acoustic AG60 amp I bought recently (see my topic in the Electronics section about it). Seems perfect for gigs like this. I'm playing my 8-string Desert Rose through the Mesa/Boogie Maverick - my normal setup these days. The only effect on the steel is the amp's reverb.

Jeff, I use the pedals and knee levers constantly on most songs. An exception is "Waiting for a Train" where I'm deliberately playing without pedals.

It's an 8 string pedal steel tuned to D6th, with most of the standard C6th and E9th pedals and levers. I tend to stay on the C6th side (inner 3 pedals) for most of the Wine Country Swing material.

I failed to say before, but you did play nice; and your duo-mate also did a nice job.

I am particularly interested in the duo format. I don't see it very often with pedal steel.

I have thought about trying to work up something like that with a singer who is a good friend of mine - as a first step in playing out. Is it any easier, harder, or whatever to work up the tunes with just the two of you as compared with a bigger band? I guess there's not much place to hide if you hit any trouble in the tune.

What about the pickup?
What is the biggest contribution to that tone? the pickup or the amp. It's obviously both along with touch and feel, but I am curious what (single event) got you to this point of trial and error to get to where the tone is? We all know it doesn't happen overnight.

The pickup is a very low impedence TrueTone.

I just dial in the sound I like, Jeff. It's not hard to do with this guitar and amp combination. I can get a good sound with other guitars and with other amps, but this combination does seem to be sort of special.

The Tone Tubby alnico+hemp speakers are pretty sweet, too.
