I've spent a lot of time listening to steel on the road--since before I ever started playing myself. One of the first tapes I ever had was Bobbe Seymore's "Pure Country Steel". I find myself going back to that one again and again.

This week in my car the spotlight was on Jim Loessberg (his new jazz CD as well as his amazing back-up playing for various Texas artists). There was also plenty of Buddy Emmons with the Swing Shift Band and Tom Morrell with the TimeWarp TopHands (still waiting for the new TWT featuring Johnny Cox).

Next week I plan on loading up Paul Franklin, Mike Johnson, and Dicky Overby.

15+ years ago Larry Lorows gave me a copy of a (Big E and Ray Pennington) album .The best of both worlds ...great steel and great vocals .

First heard "Wills Point" from that .

Have a copy in car and one in house.I put the grand kids down for their naps listening to that for past 6 years ,almost everyday to the point where they learned to operate stereo and play it by themselves.Breakem' in early!

Anything from Texas really... Overby, Day, Carpenter, Loessberg, Emmons, Palousek. Steiner, Franklin, Green, and Currie always seem to wind up in the mix also...

I've got Charles Lyonhart playing in my van with Them boyz from Woodstock New Yawk on the C.D. Larry Packer fiddle,Chris Zaloom on the Sho=Bud 6139 that I sold to him 40 years ago...great stuff.

Clete,I only text on my cellphone while driving! Seriously,when I'm driving,the road has my full attention.In my 32 years as a career fireman,I've extricated way,way too many dead folks from wrecked automobiles.I watch the videos in my easy chair at home.

As working musicians, we find that most of the time spent on many jobs is getting to and from venues.
Take your time leaving at the end of the night.
Let the bar patrons get home first.

I do a lot of driving between Sydney and Melbourne on the Hume Highway, and it's about an 8 or 9 hour drive (depending on how many times I need to stop and hit the sandboxes!! LOL). Most of the trip is taken up by me listening to Wayne Appleby on his High Flying Steel album, and Lloyd's of Nashville. Occasionally, I'll plug in the Dear Orphans if I get in a mood to hear some of my own playing, but mostly it's Wayne and Lloyd, Melbourne to Sydney, Sydney to Melbourne.

Lloyd and JayDee on Byrds' "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" and some Russ Hicks on Ween's "12 Golden Country Greats". Some fine steelin' on some less than traditional albums!

I really like the music that has been coming out of Texas. Bobby Flores, Jake Hooker, Mike Siler, Curtis Potter, Darrell McCall and Johnny Bush. I like Amber Digby and Miss Leslie too. I play in a couple different groups as my schedule allows. One is the Twitty Fever Band out of eastern Pa. You know thats a treat with all that John Hughey steel.

Buddy Emmons and Lenny Breau, "Minors Aloud" and especially "Redneck Jazz Explosion" with BE and the late Danny Gatton. Recorded live, this is Mr. Emmons at the top of his game! Note to Dean Gray..If that is an older Loretta Lynn album, it is most likely Hal Rugg on steel. Two recordings of his you would probably enjoy are, "Finally" and "Slidin' For Scale".

THe last steelers that were in my CD player were Hal/altered ego and Robert Randolph. But that was a few weeks ago. Now I'm listening to "the Shack" and I am suspecting on the way to Tulsa this weekend I will be listening to the new James Taylor/Carol King
CD. Least that's what the boss told me...(Teresa)

Hey, Victor - I listen to those two albums heaps in the car (Sweetheart OTR and 12 Golden Country Greats) I would have gotten sick of that Ween album years ago if it weren't for Russ' playing.

This week its been "Touch My Heart" the Johnny Paycheck Tribute with Lloyd all over it. Fantastic!

NRPS makes for great driving music in my book, also.
