Dobro strings: D'addario flat tops vs phosphor bronze

Post by Marc Muller »

Just got a beautiful Dobro new. Sounded great with strings from factory. put on D'addario Flat tops and seemed like guitar lost some of it's sparkle. Sounded like I put on old strings. Any opinions?

I like the D'addario phosphor bronze, medium gauge... they are bright sounding and last for quite a while.

I also tried flat tops once... but did not like the sound.

yea, I just put on D'addario's phos. bronze, I think they're mediums. EJ42 is the number and I think I like them better so far. wish I could A/B. Todd Wright at Gibson said they come with Gibson medium guage from factory

I've experimented with most brands over the last few months and I've settled on the John Pearse. They're, warm, bright and long lasting.
Haven't tried the Elixirs or the SITs, but I'll be getting round to those eventually.
cheers

I like the Flattops. They don't make as much noise as phosphor and they're not too brittle sounding like so many new strings. Haven't tried the Elixers but I must say I don't like them on my acoustic guitar. Way too "new" sounding for my taste. IMHO. - Dave

Marc,

In my experience, the D'Addario J42 phos. bronze set is by far the best sounding strings I've ever used.
